How has thinking on the buyer-side (agencies, marketers) changed in recent years? Buyer-seller relationships are becoming more disconnected, especially on the digital front. Buyers are working in self-serve environments, planning, executing, and evaluating campaigns with limited-to-no-interaction with publishers. Media planning and media buying have evolved and so have AAM's solutions. In the "old days" publishers would distribute their AAM reports to buyers. That still happens, but more often AAM accredited publisher data flows directly into the agency databases and buying tools via API, informing media decisions in the planning, execution, and evaluation phases. In my column for The Media Leader yesterday, I asked 'Who cares?' About advertising, about the advertising industry, the future for our people and so on. And it turns out that lots of people do. Since the blog from Brian Jacobs last week appeared and after yesterday's piece we've had nearly 100 people volunteer to get involved. So we are going ahead and will host a half-day seminar in September in London for people who care to discuss how we can fix some of the things that are wrong. We don't know what will emerge but we feel confident because the people who have raised their hands are ones who feel strongly about the issues we face and they represent different aspects of our industry. Also interesting to note is the people who haven't responded. You can guess who they are but perhaps a little surprising is that none of the independent consultants have shown interest, except for a few in a personal capacity. We can only speculate about why this might be but it's all entirely voluntary and everyone is welcome. If you're on our list we are issuing regular updates, including the date and venue. We didn't know what would happen when we started to talk about this but we now know there are enough people who care for us to press ahead, so we wlll. An interesting perspective from Omar Oakes at The Media Leader on how 'advertising' has become a dirty word as a result of public disapproval, among other reasons. It's incredible how far agency groups are prepared to torture language to avoid talking about advertising, perhaps in pursuit of jargon that doesn't sound like it's come out of a whiteboard session or positions an agency as being different (when they are mostly not). The research from the Advertising Association consistently shows that people are anti-advertising because of bombardment, abuse of data and the lack of relevance in what they see (personalisation, anyone?). But The Advertising Association also shows how important advertising is to the economy, employment, funding of media, 'soft power' and the creative arts. The problem isn't advertising, it's how a lot of it is executed these days and unless the problems of bombardment, data abuse and 'spray and pray' are addressed, the reputation of our industry will not recover. This is the kind of debate we should be seeing more of at conferences, and it was good to see some of these matters broached at the Advertising Association ISBA and IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising) LEAD conference last month, but this subject needs a lot more attention than some others that are of less existential importance.
