The latest findings 🆕 in the field of quantum technology patents shed light on the dynamic landscape of innovation across regions: 🔹 While the USA focuses primarily on quantum computing, China's attention lies in quantum communication. Europe, on the other hand, displays a balanced approach across all segments. 🔹 Major US players like IBM, Microsoft, Google, and Intel Corporation are spearheading quantum computing patents, while Chinese giants like Baidu, Inc. and Origin Quantum dominate quantum communication. 🔹 European players, including IQM Corporation, are making strides, with IQM ranking 30th in patent families. However, challenges persist, especially in quantum communication, where China and Japan hold sway. 🔹 Despite challenges, European companies are carving out their space. Notably, Thales, Element Six Technologies Inc., and CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) are making waves in quantum sensing, with significant contributions from the Aerospace & Defence sector. 🔬 Research & Tech Organizations: CEA, CNRS, QuTech (a collaboration between Delft University of Technology and TNO) lead in quantum computing, while Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI stands out in quantum communication. 📣 I am happy to share with my linkedin friends my minutes from the #NationalQuantumDay, which took place yesterday at the BNF, attended among others by the ministers Bruno Le Maire, Sébastien Lecornu Sylvie Retailleau and the nobel physics nobel price alain aspect. The second quantum revolution was Scientific, it is currently Technological and will be Societal in a few years. Quantum applied to Communication Cryptography should refine very quickly, reliable Quantum Computers are not foresee for the short term as the scientific community is not unanimous on the maturity level of quantum computing.   The French ecosystem is very dynamic: ➡ Its startups have raised over 350 million euros, making France the leading European country in terms of fundraising and the third worldwide behind the United States and Canada. ➡ France possesses globally recognized expertise, with clusters in Paris, Saclay, and Grenoble, where over 60% of academic skills and 80% of French startups are concentrated. The Paris Region can be compared to ecosystems like London and Oxbridge or Toronto and Sherbrooke. ➡French startups and SMEs in the quantum sector are also second internationally in terms of talent attractiveness. ➡Additionally, The Government launches the PROQCIMA program. The STS Forum today turned its attention to #quantum, and I was lucky enough to attend! 🎉 Each year in Kyoto, the Science and Technology in Society Forum holds a global symposium – a ‘Davos for science’ dedicated to the impact of science on the future of humankind and the planet. The American Associates of STS held its 2024 workshop today, hosted at the IBM Innovation Studio in New York, on the topic of quantum computing. ⚛ The half-day workshop featured esteemed guests from academia, private sector, research, and government. Here are some key takeaways from the panel and group discussions: 🔬 Transformational quantum applications are only predicted for 5-10 years in the future, or longer. Many of the first applications will aid scientists who study nanoscale molecules or systems with quantum effects, such as in biopharma, novel materials, or physics. ⚠ Social risks include a ‘winner-take-all’ actor who alone cracks the code for quantum supercomputing; the potential for rogue actors to use quantum’s power for nefarious ends; and the widening of a global digital divide. 🤝 International cooperation and science-driven inquiry are key pillars in the development of quantum computing, and will remain so as the the technology matures.
