Starting a new thread based on many public and private responses to my previous post on body weight/shape/size stigmatization (and it's link to food and eating patterns and behaviors). Common Themes in Responses to Body Weight/Shape/Size Stigmatization (and it’s Linkage to Food &Eating Patterns & Behaviors): (i) Having an external source bring your body weight/shape/size or eating patterns/behaviors into your conscious attention (indirectly or directly) (ii) …As a thing you should hold in conscious awareness in order to moderate/mediate/manipulate it (body or eating). (iii) Lack of instruction or intuition on how to go about that (which can result in behavioral extremes and self-questioning and doubting). (iv) Especially during that critical phase of development (adolescence) when our hormones and neurohormones prime us to hyper-attend to external social cues and validation. (v) Hyper-focus on physical health (vs. mental/emotional/psychosocial/spiritual/wholistic health), (vi) Food and eating being perceived as only available tool for health self-efficacy (!!). (vii) Navigating a fluid and changing body weight/shape/size (a very natural feature of the human body, especially for women) in an environment that portrays bodies as more finite, stagnant, uni-dimensional, and controllable. (viii) Perception of the body as a controllable, dependent variable vs. an infinite independent variable. (ix) Body weight/shape/size insensitivity, hyperfocus, and stigmatization in healthcare settings (e.g., from healthcare providers). (*This can often contribute to healthcare distrust and avoidance that then leaves many indivduals without access to resources to support to health goals). (x) Negative emotion linked to others’ perceptions of one’s physical body (e.g., fear, anxiety, hypersensitivity, stress). (xi) Hyperfocus on body weight/shape/size vs. body feeling/function (socioculturally as well as in healthcare systems and from healthcare providers, which can often become internalized). (xii) Juxtoposition of body weight/shape/size “standards” to feeling “at home” in one’s body. Many individuals struggle silently, feeling they don’t fit society's narrow beauty standards, making it even harder for them to seek help. Astonishingly, studies show that approximately 70% of those affected by eating disorders don't seek treatment. These are statistics that shouldn't be ignored. And neither should seeking help. Individuals like Hannah are incredibly important for raising awareness of eating disorders - but let's firstly debunk this myth that ARFID is a "rare" eating disorder! ARFID is a chronic eating disorder, often mistaken for "picky eating" and can occur in children and adults. Those struggling with ARFID can face chronic issues such as malnutrition which can impact their work, social and personal life.
