In a world full of self-publicity and extravagant self-promotion, it shouldn’t be a surprise that many businesses seem to claim badges of honour without scrutiny. Does that matter, “fake news” is so prevalent do we just disregard what businesses say about themselves – discerning audiences surely are not taken in.   At the height of his powers Jack Welch (CE of the hugely successful GEC conglomerate) articulated the importance of market leadership (Straight from the gut is still a great read). But if everyone appropriates the term does it lose its value? And how do you measure market leadership - profitability, revenue, number of employees, capital value? Market share is the most obvious but in many instances almost impossible to evaluate.   I won’t even start on Award Winning!
