NASA’s Neowise satellite, which has served as a planetary defence mission for over a decade by tracking potentially dangerous asteroids and comets, is set to crash into Earth’s atmosphere. After falling too low in orbit, NASA engineers sent the final command to the satellite, marking the end of its mission. The model is not a constellation, but rather: Manmade Outer Space Pollution. According to NASA and ESA, there are currently 34,000 objects larger than 10 cm in diameter orbiting Earth. These objects consist of defunct satellites, rockets that carried them into space, debris from missiles, and detritus left behind by astronauts. NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter ended its mission after almost three years - and we were along for the ride. The Ingenuity landed on Mars in 2021 and was originally intended to be active for only 30 days, but it far exceeded those goals. We are proud to have provided the AlBeMet aluminum-beryllium metal matrix composite used for a heat sink on which the stator was attached. The AlBeMet composite’s effectiveness helped enable the helicopter to achieve 90-second flight times in the harsh Martian environment.
