Delving into the Heart of Menu Rahmah: A Conversation with YB Fuziah Salleh Last week, I had the privilege of sitting down with YB Fuziah Salleh, the Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), to delve into the rationale behind Menu Rahmah and the concerning decrease in campaigns and awareness surrounding this pivotal initiative aimed at easing the financial burdens of our citizens. Menu Rahmah stands as a beacon of innovation, formulated without the crutch of government funding and falls under the comprehensive Payung Rahmah framework alongside Jualan Rahmah, and the special discount card for food business operators. However, two pressing question lingers: 1)How can we ensure the sustainability of this programme amidst Malaysia's ongoing struggle to fortify its food security management? 2)How long can, and should the government continue this initiative? The presence of foreign F&B companies has been growing and in demand in Malaysia. Take Mixue as an example, it has risen to dominance in a short period of time. So what are some aspects of this phenomenon? Pros:  -> Economic development: Increased foreign investment, local job opportunities, and government revenue 📈 -> Global recognition 🌍 Cons: -> Food security: Increased competition between local and foreign F&B companies  -> Cultural appropriation: Risk of food acculturation That said, having foreign F&B helps grow our economy and gives us additional palate. While this might pose competition for the local scene, underlying is actually huge collaboration opportunities between local and foreign to increase local traditional food exposure and interest in their region. If you are a local F&B, this would be the best time to consider your expansion. Have you heard of Gastrodiplomacy? As I was enjoying breakfast tacos yesterday, an interview was being shown on the TV. The information below is from an article released by Food and Wine in 2023 about how Thailand enacted Gastrodiplomacy. The interview I saw was how was the same has been done now with Korean food. I had never heard this terminology before. but the headline of the article I read was "Ever wondered why there are so many Thai restaurants in America?" See below: "Gastrodiplomacy, also known as culinary diplomacy, involves a country using food as a means of globalizing and gaining international influence. This was something Thailand was particularly skilled at. In 2002, the Thai government launched the Global Thai Program, a diplomatic initiative with the aim of increasing the number of Thai restaurants worldwide. The state provided training programs, grants, and information to Thai investors who wanted to open restaurants abroad. As part of this campaign, Pad Thai — a dish with virtually no cultural history — was positioned as Thailand's national dish and pioneered a culinary campaign funded by the Thai government with 500 million baht ($15 million USD). The government believed that the project would contribute to agricultural and food exports, while also producing foreign income from overseas transactions of goods and services. It worked. Thailand's cuisine has become a global phenomenon as a result of the project."
