Just wrapped up my Brooklyn Nine-Nine binge today, and what a ride it's been! The laughs were endless, and amidst the hilarity, I learned some real leadership insights from the dynamic duo - Deputy Commissioner Raymond Holt and Captain Terry Jeffords. Holt, the epitome of calm leadership, sets the tone for a workplace where being an ace detective is the norm. Terry, a powerhouse, tough as nails with a heart of gold, rocks through the ranks from Sergeant to Lieutenant to Captain. How Terry seamlessly handles both roles blows my mind – running the precinct like a boss and being a super-family man. Holt and Terry showcase the perfect leadership combo – Holt's precision and professionalism paired with Terry's blend of toughness, mentorship, and a family-first approach. They turn the precinct into a family hangout, proving that a strong team is about more than just solving cases. This Brooklyn Nine-Nine binge was more than laughs; it was like a front-row seat to a leadership and life-juggling masterclass. I agree. Nor, indeed, should they any longer be given for political service (or working in civil service, as SPADs, etc) or for leverage. This includes being placed in the Lords (just take a look at who Johnson put there, and consider what they might have done to 'deserve' it). Also consider that people in a position to 'hold something over' others in a position to make or recommend awards (lying, infidelity, etc etc) can in some cases receive a meal ticket for life (currently £342 for each day that they enter the chamber, irrespective of time spent in it). Fine for many of the hard working members, but not chancers. The whole system was already questionable, but the current party of power has pushed it over the edge. Any politician that now accepts such awards could (rightly or wrongly) be seen as tainted or having been influenced or corrupted in some way. Such a shame for those who deserve civil recognition. There should be a full and auditable and public trail, to see how any particular award was given, the person(s) involved, and criteria used.

Many people don't realize how important it is to be elected by your peers as a member of firm leadership. Well, let me tell you, it is a big deal. The decision is not entered into lightly. The people who lead our firms are the ones who ultimately make all of the decisions that impact every aspect of the firm, including its success, culture, standards, integrity, and so much more. Before a vote is taken, there are deep discussions about a candidates ethics, credibility, team mentality, client service standards, skills, experience, and other qualities that define a good leader. So when you see the many posts this month in your social feeds regarding shareholder/partner elections, know that all of those people worked hard to achieve this level in their careers - and they endured some sort of vetting process within their firms to prove themselves worthy of this accomplishment. #lawfirms #lawfirmleadership #careerachievement #careergoals
