My Guide to a Successful Career in Tech 💡💻 Over the years, I've learned to take advice from people who are where I want to be or have achieved what I want to. When you see a post like this, you might expect some "big" terminology, but in reality, it is the basic things that you do that determine success in any field. While there are free resources available to learn different skills today, one thing you must pay with is your TIME. You need to put in effort in doing the routine, which might be boring for months. At the beginning, you're full of energy and excited to learn, but three weeks in, it starts to seem like you're not making progress. That's the learning and building phase, which requires you to keep on doing the work. I can do it, you can do it, we can do it. Five things I apply in my career, that will lead to a successful tech career. ▶Find a path you'll start with. ▶Practice and get feedback. ▶Have an open mindset, and be willing to learn everyday. ▶Share your work - write articles, create videos, post about it. ▶Be consistent What principles have guided your career in tech? While IT positions can offer #competitive salaries, especially as you progress in your career, it's important to recognize that entry-level roles may not provide immediate #financial gratification. Experience and skill development play significant roles in increasing earning potential over time. > So, can I make the #switch? Yes, nothing is stopping you. Pivoting careers is hard. The right strategy makes it a lot less hard. 3 tips to successfully move to a new industry ⬇ ⬇ ⬇ 𝟭. 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆. These need to be specific and unique for that industry. - Why are you drawn to that specific industry over all others? - What have you experienced that makes you passionate about that industry? ❌ BAD EXAMPLE ❌ Saying you want to move to HR because it's fun to help people. ✅ GOOD EXAMPLE ✅ Talk about how much you enjoyed training and supporting 40+ sales reps as team leader. How over 90% of them are still at the company and that you love making colleagues feel supported at work. 𝟮. 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆. Keyword here: 'ALREADY' Telling a hiring team you're 'planning' to learn more about programming to prepare for this developer role won't help you. Studying is good, but doing is better. ❌ BAD EXAMPLE ❌ You want to pivot into programming, so you study some books on programming and watch some LinkedIn Learning programming videos. You also plan to take a coding bootcamp some time in the future. ✅ GOOD EXAMPLE ✅ You take a 12-week coding bootcamp. Then, you take the skills you gained from the bootcamp to build a simple app similar to what you'd build at the company you're applying to. You outline your full app design process in your online portfolio and include it in your application. 𝟯. 𝗗𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲. Relying purely on a resume/cover letter when changing industries will have an EXTREMELY low success rate. You're not as 'qualified' for the job as other candidates, so you have to show your value in other ways. - Talk with other professionals who have pivoted into the industry you're hoping to move to. - Attend online/offline conferences and events in your target industry. Add people you meet on LinkedIn after. - Deeply research the companies you're hoping to work at. Add details about the company in your application so hiring teams can see you've put effort into applying and already know their company well. - Network with people at your target companies. Don't immediately ask for help or a 'coffee chat' (asking for something immediately after meeting someone almost always makes a bad impression). Find people who seem active on LinkedIn. Support their posts and try to build some type of relationship before asking them to help you. ========= Pivoting industries is hard. But so is spending the rest of your career in an industry you're not passionate about. PS: I mentioned 3 tips in this post. I recently came across a disturbing statistic: many people who enroll in tech programs end up feeling depressed and hopeless. Why is that? Some of them have unrealistic expectations that finishing a program will automatically land them a job. But the truth is, completing a program is just the beginning of a long journey. You still need to work on personal projects, build your portfolio, and keep learning new skills to make yourself stand out in the competitive market. And you also need to be prepared for rejection, which is inevitable in any job search. Rejection is not a sign of failure, but an opportunity to learn and improve. Another common mistake that some tech graduates make is waiting until they feel fully qualified before applying for a job. They think they need to know everything before they can start working. But this is a trap, because the more you learn, the more you realize how much you don't know. You will never feel ready if you keep waiting for perfection. The best way to learn is by doing, and the best way to do is by working on real projects with real challenges. You will be surprised by how much you can learn on the job, and how much you already know. So, if you are feeling depressed or discouraged after finishing a tech program, don't give up. Remember that you have accomplished something amazing, and that you have the potential to achieve even more. Don't let your expectations or fears hold you back from pursuing your dreams. Apply for jobs that interest you, even if you don't meet all the requirements. Show your passion, your creativity, and your willingness to learn. According to Linkedin, the fastest-growing industry in the U.K. is the #education sector, with GenZs seeking out roles as #teachers, #lecturers, and learning support assistants. On one hand, I LOVE this: 😍 It suggests that GenZ is trying to do good in the world, and that we're looking for diverse ways to do it, beyond eco-friendly jobs and #activism 😍 GenZ is famous for falling prey to #misinformation online... but their rising interest in educational fields tells us that not all hope is lost! If we want to #teach, then we must care about #knowledge more than we're given credit for. I do have some qualms though... 😥 The shift to education is in part being attributed to #masslayoffs in the tech world. GenZ prefers to have stable, low paying jobs... but what happens when education gets to be too much? We've all had teachers who didn't want to be there, and that's never a happy ending. 😥 Education is changing. Do these GenZers want to be educators of the old guard, or are they prepared to pivot into a #AI dominated sector... one with rules that have yet to be written?
