STB 2192 ANIMAL BIOTECHNOLOGY PRE-SERVICE LEARNING TO SABAKI FARM On 23rd of October, my groupmates and I had our first discussion that took place at our college's cafe. The meeting started at 8.30 pm. During the meeting, there are a few agendas that has been discussed, including: 1. Elect a Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, Marketing, and Logistics. 2. Choose a title for our service learning 3. Find a place to conduct our service learning 4. Find the contact person After each position has been assigned, we have agreed on the title "Management Practices to Maintain Quality Goat Meat". We browsed through the Internet to look for a place to conduct our service learning and there were plenty of suggestions. After we did some research on the internet, we have agreed to go to Sabaki Farm which is not so far away from our college and it was a convenient idea. During the discussion, we have found the contact person of theowner of the farm and planned to call them on the next day during working hour. We are very satisfied with the outcomes of the discussion. The meeting minutes were distributed after the meeting by our secretary.

Bayer Looks To AI To Combat Herbicide Resistance Faster Bayer's crop science division is increasingly turning to artificial intelligence in its battle against crop killing weeds, the company told Reuters. Weeds are growing resistant to the herbicides already on the market, and agribusiness companies like Bayer are in a desperate search for new modes of action to help farmers kill them. Bayer's Icafolin product will be its first new mode of action herbicide in some 30 years when it launches in Brazil in 2028. Frank Terhorst, executive vice president of strategy and sustainability at Bayer's Crop Science Division, told Reuters on Monday that AI could help speed up finding that next new mode of action. "You want to find the one where you have maximum performance on what you want to kill – weeds, and basically no impact on everything else. And that balance is extremely difficult," Terhorst told Reuters after an event in Chicago. AI, he said, helps the company match the protein structure of a weed with a molecule that targets that structure, and enables it to use huge amounts of data. It is a faster process, he said, and there are fewer dropouts.Bob Reiter, head of research and development, crop science, at Bayer, said in a statement that with AI tools, the timeline for the discovery of the next new mode of action could be much shorter. Here is some more interesting real-world chemistry of turpentine, which is mostly a mixture of the pinenes, which comes in alpha and beta forms. An old practice of veterinarians used turpentine and iodine to treat wounds in livestock. Many who have read All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot could recall this being described to disinfect a wound on a horse’s hoof. In my own case, while I was a graduate student at Berkeley, T. Ross Kelly of Boston College was on sabbatical in the Heathcock group (he had been Clayton’s first graduate student, and as lore has it, the first PhD produced by a professor is always the best) and worked in my lab. Ross told me about the iodine / pinene reaction that he used as a demonstration of ring strain in his organic chemistry lectures. He demonstrated it in our hood, and at various times in my teaching career, I have also done the demonstration in my lectures.   Below is a structure of alpha-pinene, which reacts with iodine to form an iodonium ion. Because of the strained adjacent 4-membered ring, this intermediate undergoes a rearrangement, with multiple possible intermediates and products. Similar reaction chemistry can be written for beta-pinene, which is just an alkene isomer of alpha-pinene. The strain of cyclobutane is about 26 kcal/mol, nearly as much as the strain of cyclopropane, and all of these rearrangement reactions release the strain in the pinene, which is evolved as heat. In the use of iodine and turpentine in wound treatment, there is not only the disinfecting power of the iodine (well-known in the classical antiseptic, tincture of iodine – an ethanol solution), but also the heat evolved, which can help sterilize a wound. In the case of performing this reaction as a demonstration, the heat evolved from the reaction serves to vaporize the excess iodine, leading to a purple cloud. It could be a challenge to locate authentic turpentine in the modern world. It formerly was used as a paint thinner, but any volatile hydrocarbon can serve that role, so more likely the paint solvents one would find at home improvement stores these days is a petroleum distillate.
