That’s why, for nearly four years, our Policy team advocated tirelessly for “Give SNAP a Raise”—which was partially funded in September of this year. It’s what drives the work behind our Produce Rx program, which reached more than 1,200 D.C. households in 2023. And it’s why our farm and community wellness space, The Well at Oxon Run, grew, harvested, and distributed more than two tons of produce this season. Yesterday, our 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Cuisine Rescue, delivered the 50,000th pound of leftover food we've recovered this year. We rescue un-plated, leftover food from restaurants/caterers/food suppliers and redistribute it to Charleston-area nonprofits who focus on feeding hungry people. USDA estimates 30-40% of food produced in the US winds up in landfills, and that 12% of Lowcountry residents are "food insecure". We aim to fix that. So while 50,000 pounds is a decent start, we have a long way to go...mostly in the area of food donors. There are "Good Samaritan" laws--federal and state--protecting food donors from criminal/civil liability, plus federal tax incentives. And lots of mouths to feed. There's work to do; let's get busy. KCTV reports (https://ow.ly/Z6Q550Q7tau) that food pantries in Kansas City are experiencing serious shortages, trying to keep up with the demand for food during the holiday season. City Union Mission, for instance, is running low on Thanksgiving food boxes and urgently needs food donations to serve more hungry households in Kansas City. Feeding America reports that approximately 1 in 10 Kansans and 1 in 9 Missourians are hungry. 😳 This is what keeps me going. How do we unify all the efforts to overcome the fragmentation and make getting food where it is needed super efficient? 1. Collective advocacy. 2. Education and business acumen. 3. Shared systems.

Yea it’s a five minute video, who watches those anymore! However, if you followed us over the course of Serve Week 2024 (The Ocho) this is an awesome wrap up and great work by the team. We try and use LinkedIn to open a window into our culture. And while Foundry Commercial isn’t perfect and we will always have work to do in pursuit of our standards, I think this is one of the things we get really right.
