We, along with our Black Attorney Resource Group Co-Chairs, Katessa C. and Ryan Chapoteau, recently had the privilege of welcoming Bruce Jackson, Microsoft Associate General Counsel and Managing Director of Strategic Partnership, to discuss his memoir, Never Far from Home. During one of our most well-attended #DEI events to date, Bruce's dynamic storytelling brought excerpts from his book to life, unpacking many relatable lessons and sharing invaluable insights with our community. #EmploymentLaw #Juneteenth

A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of Julian Richard delivering a talk at our law firm. In the UK legal sector, Black Partners make up less than 1%; the research conducted by Julian seeks to understand their experience. By doing this, Julian allowed people to speak about their experiences, successes, and challenges. From this, he developed key actions for law firms to improve race equity in the legal sector. Race equity work is complex for those working in my network in the DEI space. Taking a data-informed approach and being outcome-focused is key to shifting culture. This research is a good example of a data-led approach; if you haven't read the research, I encourage you to do so. A special thanks to Julian for delivering an inspiring and authentic presentation and the amazing colleagues who attended the event and are supporting the journey of change. 🥁 ...The results are in ...and the winner is...🥁 (When asked what you value most from your legal advisers) 🥇 PRAGMATISM 🥇 A whopping 41% of people voted for this, although it's definitely something that might divide opinion (especially among lawyers, I guess) 🤔. At Seven Legal we understand that you cannot do business without taking risk (especially in a high-growth environment). Our Fractional GC offer gives you access to senior lawyers who get that. It's not just about black letter law; it's about understanding and managing risk while running a business. Also on the podium: 🥈 RESPONSIVENESS 🥈 - it's amazing how many clients I speak to tell me they feel ignored by their external advisers - this is backed up by the poll results that show over a third of you felt this was the most valued characteristic in a legal adviser. The Fractional GC model gives you the look and feel of an in-house lawyer (think Slack integrations etc.) which means we can be responsive and pro-active in dealing with legal challenges. 🥉 LEGAL EXPERTISE 🥉 - a quarter of people thought this was most valuable. We agree. It's got to be the foundation on which pragmatic advice is given. Overall, my key takeaway is that it's probably a given that you are an expert at what you do. However for legal advisers, as with any business, you need to have customer experience front of mind when providing your service. Maybe a useful reminder for us lawyers... 😅

This Black History Month, understanding your rights and accessing strong legal representation are crucial, especially for Black communities disproportionately impacted by the justice system. Facing criminal charges can be overwhelming. But you don't have to navigate this alone. Here are 5 key tips for choosing the right criminal defense attorney: 1. Understand Your Charges: Know the specifics of your situation and potential penalties. Research relevant laws and procedures. 2. Research Experience: Seek an attorney with experience handling similar cases, ideally involving the specific charges you face. 3. Consider Communication Style: Choose someone who actively listens, clearly communicates options, and respects your concerns. 4. Check Credentials & Reviews: Verify qualifications, bar membership, and disciplinary history. Read client testimonials and online reviews. 5. Fees & Transparency: Discuss fees upfront and ensure clear communication about costs and payment options. Remember: Don't wait to seek legal counsel.
