I have been pondering the recent headlines about NHS not meeting key targets for #cancer healthcare, in particular the Faster Diagnosis Standard (FDS) of 75% patients to be diagnosed within 28 days of urgent referral (never met since set up in 2021, see below from Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Our #VivoSight Dx scanner is widely used in Germany for diagnosis of #basalcellcarcinoma (BCC), the commonest, but less serious, form of skin cancer. I think introducing VivoSight into NHS would benefit ALL UK cancer patients. Here’s why: nearly all other cancers require a biopsy for diagnosis. A sample of tissue has to be taken and analysed in NHS histopathology labs. I was told by a UK dermatologist at a leading hospital that there is always a backlog of biopsy samples to be analysed. Now, #BCC is extremely common and in the UK results in huge numbers of skin biopsies and these clog up the labs and contribute to delays for ALL cancer diagnoses. I am hoping that we can work with the NHS to introduce VivoSight into the system for fast rule-in #diagnosis of BCC cutting the need for confirmatory biopsies of this common type of #skincancer (as it is in Germany) and so reducing the pressure on the NHS labs so they can focus on the diagnosis of other cancers and get those waiting times down!

So, what exactly is #breastcancer? Cancer is a disease that occurs when cells in the body grow uncontrollably, forming abnormal masses, which are known as tumors. Breast cancer, in particular, is a type of cancer that develops in breast tissues. It's essential to note that breast tissue is not limited to the breasts only. Millions of new cases of breast cancer occur every year worldwide with about 42,000 deaths from breast cancer in the #UnitedStates and 500,000 deaths globally! It extends up to the collarbone and reaches under the armpits. Breast tissue exists in people of all genders, ages, and races. In the #UnitedKingdom, statistics show that approximately 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. According to WHO, globally 1 in 12 females will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and 1 in 71 females die from it. New technologies like CBCT have great potential in breast cancer imaging. In addition to stressing that all patients 45 and older – or younger if they have a family history of colorectal cancer – should receive a colonoscopy, physicians should also be cognizant of the increased incidence of colorectal cancer among younger patients. This means being particularly vigilant when learning of symptoms, like bloody stool, that might not immediately be associated with comparatively young individuals. Notably, I also prefer that patients receive a full colonoscopy. Any screening is better than none at all, but a full procedure is highly preferable for its thoroughness.
