SPACE HIBERBATION FOR LONG SPACE FLIGHTS: Astronauts that hibernate on long spaceflights,Such experiments would pave the way for a science-fiction-like approach to long-duration space missions that would see crew members placed into protective slumber for weeks or months on their way to distant destinations. Hibernating on a year-long trip to Mars would not just prevent boredom in a tiny space capsule; it would also save mission cost, as the hibernating crew members wouldn't need to eat or drink and would even require far less oxygen than those awake. There are other, rather odd benefits of hibernation, as well. Research in animals suggests that bodies of hibernating astronauts might waste away much less than the bodies of those awake in microgravity. Upon arrival, these hibernators would thus be fit and ready to commence challenging exploration almost straight away after regaining consciousness.The first hibernation studies with human subjects could be feasible within a decade, a European Space Agency (ESA) researcher thinks. For all these reasons, hibernation, also known as torpor, has long been a staple of sci-fi space movies. From "Alien" to "2001: A Space Odyssey," fictional space travelers have crossed vast distances cocooned unconscious inside high-tech pods while AI machines and android robots keep their spacecraft on a steady course. #snsinstitutions #snsdesignthikers #designthinking

If you've ever fantasized about zipping around in space like Luke Skywalker, then buckle up because it’s closer to reality than your uncle's conspiracy theories. I just read this article about Sierra Space's new Dream Chaser space plane, and let me tell you, it's basically the Millennium Falcon without Chewbacca shedding all over your seat. Now, this isn’t your typical NASA tin can - we’re talking sleek, retractable wings, a fuselage that screams “I belong in a galaxy far, far away,” and it's called the Vulcan, for crying out loud. Yeah, that’s right, we’re crossing the nerd streams here – Star Trek and Star Wars fans, can we just get along for one spacecraft? 🖖🌌 But here’s the kicker – they're saying it’s going to be like catching a cab! Apparently, the former NASA astronaut, Tom Marshburn (who’s now playing doctor over at Sierra Space), tossed out a line like, “Oh, it’s a possibility I might be flying, it’s a possibility you could be a passenger as well." I mean, come on! Next thing you know, your mom's going to book a trip to the ISS to escape your dad’s snoring. They plan to fly this bad boy for cargo missions to the ISS. Yeah, cargo missions – because even astronauts need their Amazon packages. But what’s cool is this thing lands on runways. No more splashdowns like you’re reenacting Apollo 13 every time you come back to Earth. And it’s the first private spaceplane, built on the dreams of every sci-fi nerd out there. Today, when many think of space, it's often about stars, the universe, and futuristic movies. However, as highlighted in the opinion attached, space investments and visions are crucial for advancing technology that impacts our daily lives and work. The persistent focus on space has enabled functions essential to our daily routines. It's clear that space plays a vital role in various industries we heavily rely on.
