Senior at Syracuse University--POSSE Foundation Scholar | Our Time Has Come Scholar

Hey LinkedIn fam, it’s been a while! With only 9 more days until I head back to Syracuse University for my senior year, I wanted to share my study abroad experience with you all. During Spring ’24, I studied at the SU London Center. Despite the English pound taking a toll on my wallet 😭 , I had a wonderful time and wouldn’t have chosen another place to study abroad. 🛩 ❤️ 🚉 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 During my time, I: - Traveled to Scotland, Ireland, Switzerland, Amsterdam, and Denmark. My favorite place was Amsterdam—don't ask me why, haha. - Pitched a "stranger than fiction" feature documentary with Ashley Moran and Alysah Pantorilla for our Documenting Reality course, taught by Carol Nahra. I’m so glad to have had them as my partners for this pitch! - Created a documentary with Olivia Stepter on Black n White Cafe, a historic Brixton restaurant known for its authentic Jamaican and Caribbean food. Olivia is so talented and I was so lucky to witness her work! - Received the Syracuse London Creative Brilliance Award for two of my class projects! One of them was a digital newsletter I made for my Race, Gender, & The Media course about the 2023 film Rye Lane. Check it out! https://lnkd.in/eF9xPPWE  - Met some family members for the first time! Discovering I had family in London was a game changer, and spending time with them made my London experience even better! - Visited the London Embassy, which was so cool. Thank you Rebecca L Farnum for the opportunity! - Learned about the racial and economic disparities within communities of color in the UK. Although I enjoyed my time, it was hard to ignore how people of color are treated in England. Housing is less affordable for Black and Brown communities, and the cost of living crisis is worsening. Racism and homophobia are also very apparent in London. The US and UK are similar in these respects, and being in the land of the number one colonizer reminded me that systems designed to harm communities of color exist everywhere. It's just sad. To end on a lighter note, thank you to everyone who made my abroad experience so much fun. I can’t believe I have all these memories to constantly reminisce about. And I did it with only $1,500 worth of loans—isn’t that beautiful? 😙 Also, you know the content was posted on the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University Instagram page. 😊 - https://lnkd.in/eDdnWAhG - https://lnkd.in/eZ_rbScq - https://lnkd.in/efmdBDQ9
