As we strive for greater diversity and inclusion in the workplace, one powerful avenue is often overlooked: internships. Companies have a unique opportunity to not only provide valuable learning experiences but also to actively cultivate a diverse talent pipeline. Recent statistics from a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) reveal that Black students accounted for only 6% of paid interns, and Hispanic students made up only 10.2% of unpaid interns. Financial barriers should never stand in the way of opportunity. Paid internships not only provide much-needed income for students but also ensure that access to valuable professional experiences is equitable for all. It's an investment in the future workforce and a step towards leveling the playing field. Understanding the importance of internships as more than just temporary roles where fetching coffee or making copies should be the norm. Internships should be carefully designed to not only provide valuable work experience but also to serve as an opportunity for both interns and the company to assess if it is a mutual fit. By giving interns real responsibilities and allowing them to contribute to real projects, you can create a win-win situation where both the intern and the company can learn and grow together. Last week, the American Opportunity Index released a first-of-a-kind ranking of the top 50 employers that can offer recent high school graduates with the best pathway to a sustaining career and increased compensation. As traditional colleges falter in an evolving education and employment landscape, more Gen Z & Gen A are realizing the viability of jumping directly from high school to career training. And many brands are catching on, offering young employees a more flexible, and reactive education and training curriculum - one that not only leaves young people without debt, but also provides a much better chance of full time employment. 💡 One example? AT&T offering young people nano degree certifications, virtual internships, GEDs, and an internship program specifically for students from unique backgrounds and underrepresented communities. Internships, when well executed can be tools that elevate your impact with respect to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This isn't just about paying your interns well, either. That's the bare minimum. Not everyone has access to a car to arrive on time or a budget for nice clothing to match the corporate aesthetic. However, one of the best ways to influence upward mobility is relationships. As interns - they have less to lose and more to gain by building relationships with each other and staying connected. In addition to making sure your program is less about cleaning out the file cabinets and more about building basic skills that make them viable for entry level roles... teach your interns how to network in a fashion that cultivates depth of relationship - not just quantities. I made that mistake as a rookie intern. By the 4th internship I realized collecting the name or business card of every lost soul I encountered in the elevator wasn't going to cut it.
