Cedar Fair Entertainment Company goes out on a high note with the last quarter of stand-alone earnings. The final chance for Cedar Fair to show what they could do before the merger with Six Flags was finalized was a victory lap. The record-setting quarter will help to lay a great foundation for the journey ahead. Great revenue growth helped to push profits beyond where they have been. Let’s take a splash down the log flume to see what happened: 🔵 Attendance was up by +368K in the quarter, primarily due to having a larger pass base (+9% to prior year), recovery of group business, and new rides and attractions in key markets that brought people in. There is some funking calendar comparisons going on this quarter but to simplify it, they had 33 fewer operating days compared to last year but still had more people visit. As a theme park, this is what you want to do. It costs money to open for a day so you can save money by not unlocking the gates and it looks like in this case attendance was not impacted. The average daily attendance was up +9% this quarter - that’s what we like to see. But there was one rain cloud, per caps (average guest spending) were down about -3%. This was due to guests spending -6% less on admission and remaining flat on food & beverage and merch spend. Obviously, not the direction we wanted to go but it looks like the discounting of ticket products worked and drove more admissions volume to make up for the dip in rate. It gives  “I don’t care where you get the money from, just get it” vibes (in a good way). 🔵 Total costs were up about +10% or $35M. This increase was primarily due to expenses related to the merger of $11M and $5M for more operating expenses in the quarter due to a calendar shift. Since the ups in revenue outpaced the ups in cost, we have a more profitable quarter (always nice to see). AEBITDA (a profit measure that removes merger-related costs among other things) was up to $205M, an increase of +35%! 🔵 Now for the true test. The companies are officially merged and from a leadership perspective, Cedar Fair has their hands on the control panel. They will need to implement their specific operating practices at Six that have led to financial success at the Cedar Fair legacy brand. Can they do it? Based on these results, I'm bullish. The professional’s Touch on my brand. It's the 14th day of super amazing results. I’m a hospitality girl at heart, and it shows.. Those that know me from way back might know I studied hospitality management. And even though I’m now in branding & communications, hospitality still runs through my veins. I started working in hospitality from the tender age of 16 (I’m just a baby!) and worked in and around that industry for over a decade.
