How did we re-enroll 1,945 learners, help 402 graduate, and recover $7.8 million in tuition for Old Dominion University? By leveraging technology and patented predictive scoring to understand the learners backstory, motivations for earning a credential, and their relationships (with themselves, the institution, family, finances, and work). This allowed our Success Coaches to provide the right resources at the right time. Throughout the partnership, ReUp also provided several recommendations for wraparound support based on student feedback. For example, several low-income students told ReUp coaches that taking on an unpaid internship to fulfill the requirements of a program was unaffordable. “We found the grants and resources we needed, worked with our administration, and developed an internship grant program that is helping to address that,” Scott Harrison said, ODU’s Associate VP of Administration for SEES. As a result of ReUp’s continual feedback-driven recommendations from over 283,000 students, ODU developed several best practices that helped them re-enroll over 1,945 learners and recover $7.8 million in tuition. In this post I am trying to find similarities in the way Sweta Tibrewal and I work. Having recently connected with Sweta Tibrewal on LinkedIn, I found common ground in our roles as volunteers at AXF, particularly in our shared passion for educating children. While Sweta focuses on education, my journey, which commenced in January 2023 when I departed from corporate life to pursue my true calling, has been more unconventional. This transition has not been without its challenges, a reality familiar to anyone embarking on a similar path. Despite ongoing difficulties, I firmly believe the journey is worthwhile. For me, divine intervention seemed evident as pieces of the puzzle fell into place, guiding me through encounters with significant individuals who have both entered and exited my life, each playing a pivotal role in this transformative journey. AXF emerged as a beacon of hope, igniting my foray into the realm of education, particularly in supporting underprivileged children. Interestingly, I came to realize that it was I who was truly underprivileged, having previously failed to engage meaningfully with these children's lives. Subsequently, I ventured into tutoring, albeit with a unique approach. Rejecting conventional methods focused solely on academic achievement, I aimed to offer a holistic educational experience. This approach resonated with parents disillusioned by profit-driven educational systems. Through conversations with concerned mothers (here I have consciously referred to a specific gender (mothers) which speaks of the unfortunate situation that exists in India. I plan to dedicate a separate post to discuss this issue. I find this glaring gender disparity at AXF with my Centre Head urging me to increase my “tribe” :) ), I began to understand the shortcomings of our current educational landscape, particularly the neglect of fundamental skills like communication and the lack of depth in subject matter. This deficiency in education, compounded by a bias against females, is a pressing issue affecting all aspects of children's lives, from academic performance to career prospects. Drawing from my experiences, including my involvement in addressing workplace sexual harassment, I have endeavored to support mothers and daughters facing similar challenges, integrating counseling into my tutoring sessions which hitherto has never been attempted in conventional tutoring to the best of my knowledge. Through individual anecdotes, such as restoring a student's confidence after experiencing verbal abuse or assisting a mother in addressing her daughter's bullying, I aim to highlight the pervasive issues requiring urgent attention. My intention is not self-congratulation but rather to shed light on the systemic flaws demanding immediate remedy. I request people and especially men to join Sweta Tibrewal and our ilk in this 'mini' revolution with 'mega' outcomes for the greater good of society.

MDRC report highlights new findings from a random assignment evaluation of the first seven P-TECH Grades 9–14 schools in New York City. Conducted by a Network research team at MDRC, the study is the first rigorous evaluation of the P-TECH model and provides findings related to impact, implementation, and costs. P-TECH 9–14 schools collaborate with local colleges to enable students to earn a high school diploma within four years followed by a cost-free, industry-recognized associate’s degree. During the six-year program, employer partners provide students with work-based learning experiences such as internships, mentoring, and job shadowing. This report provides three years of post-high school follow-up, including during the pandemic. Previous reports from the study showed that P-TECH students earned more credits, passed more New York State Regents exams, and were much more likely to take college courses and earn college credits in high school than comparison group students. New findings in this report indicate that the P-TECH model increased students' postsecondary degree completion, particularly for male students, and boosted internship and dual enrollment rates, even during the pandemic. I wish I figured this out sooner when I was in college - It's not that hard to stand out. Most schools have thousands, or tens-of-thousands of students. And most of them go to class (sometimes), clubs (sometimes), and hang out with their friends all the time. There are thousands of opportunities to stand out on college campuses, and once I started looking for them, I found that many more came my way. When you become known on campus as someone who does cool things and is helpful to others, others want you to help them do cool things, too. Here's four ways I stood out in college, that you can copy: 1. Built a hammock lounge on my campus. It was shockingly easy, and the school later built 9 more. Let me know if you want the pitch deck I used. 2. Ran a sustainable clothing company, using the school's entrepreneurship resources to help me get off the ground to sell on campus and online. 3. Got really good grades. This one is pretty self explanatory. I asked professors for help when I was struggling, and found they were always willing to explain the topics to me again. 4. Ordered $thousands of Chick-Fil-A for football tailgates as Treasurer of the student section athletic club. All these opportunities helped me stand out from all the other business students on campus and secure my internships.
