7 years ago, I couldn't design a simple webpage. Today, I can create just about any user-friendly interface for web apps. What changed? It wasn't just talent. Talent is just the tip of the iceberg. Mastery in design requires dedication, continuous learning, and a bit of grit. Here are 3 crucial lessons I've learned about achieving mastery in design: 1️⃣ Talent is just the price of entry. It's commitment that sets you apart. → I spent countless nights learning new tools and techniques. 2️⃣ Feedback, even when it stings, is gold. Learn to seek it out, not avoid it. → I actively asked for critiques, even when it was uncomfortable. 3️⃣ Design isn't just about aesthetics. It's about solving problems creatively. → I started focusing on user needs, not just pretty pixels. Remember: Talent is just the beginning. Hey LinkedIn Community ! Since i started focusing more on my web design journey, the important part of learning designs are the case studies and psychological principal of designs. During my 4th semester of college i had the chance to study Basic Psychology as one of our subjects. We were introduced to different principles of psychology and the part that interested me was how they are so closely related to our everyday lives. How every human have different set of emotions and also how every object and thing around us tells a different story . In that mean time we were also introduced to Gestalt Psychology which talks about few principles such as proximity, similarity ,closure , figure ground etc. While i was doing my first design on Figma I realized how important this principle holds in designing products in a way that gives seamless user experience. For example: Principal of Proximity is often used to show the grouping of elements by placing them near to eatch other . These principles let the designer make a conscious decision to follow gestalt’s laws to create a clutter-free design that drives brand recognition and consumer-friendly businesses. #webdesign #uidesign #uiux #development #uxprinciples #psychology

One of things we need to stop doing as a community is perpetuating the myth that you should be 'influencing strategy' as newer designer. If you're doing "tactical" work, you're doing exactly what you're supposed to be doing. Designing screens, talking to customers, researching design patterns, shipping code. These are all really difficult things and you need to get good at them. That's what the business (and your users) needs. It takes years and years to be able to add anything meaningful to strategy. You can't be there 10 minutes and expect to start running things (and trust me you don't want to, strategy is really really hard). It doesn't matter how many bullshit canvases, templates, or courses you go on. You need to do the hard yards first. Learn to get really, really, really fucking good at making products. Learn what makes a good product. What makes a bad product. Don't run before you can walk.

A little story about passion. As a designer and engineer, My passion for tech and everything around it grew immensely. Days flew by, and I learned that everything you do must be special, just like you. ❤️ Your work should reflect who you are and showcase your capabilities, no matter the path you take. Be passionate about it. Three years ago, I started my degree in software engineering, and I was thrilled to have chosen a path I truly adore. About a year ago in college, a lecturer assigned a task to build and design a website. When I heard the word "design," I was amazed at the idea of coding and designing simultaneously. I said to myself... "It's really amazing how you can be passionate in two worlds: designing and engineering." So, I took a UI/UX Design course and had the time of my life. I was coding and designing at the same time! This is where I found my passion for merging coding and designing. Back to tech, what's the most important tool I use in my work? You guessed it—keyboards! I dived into customizing keyboards, and with my passion for design, I started building custom keyboards with custom-colored keycaps to match my taste. This led me to a third path: customizing tech. I am thrilled to design on something that suits me and that I interact with all the time. To this day, I am passionate about three paths, and I can't wait to discover more in the future. As I said in the beginning, everything you do and everything you are must be special. 🙏

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…I used to be a teacher. I taught high school IT (and junior science) at an all-girls school. It was an amazing opportunity and I was regularly jealous of what the kids learnt in class. Young Katie would have begged to be taught those things but tech was different when I was in school. More Logowriter (anyone remember the turtle??) and less Photoshop and game design. ANYWAY..I loved teaching photoshop. I was (and still am) completely self-taught in it. When you have to stand up in front of a group of students and explain how to perform a technique in photoshop, or what layers are, I learnt quickly you need to KNOW your stuff or your classroom turns to chaos. This helped cement my knowledge more than anything else ever could. It was through teaching that I discovered my own love of design which motivated me to enrol at Shillington College and study graphic design. I’ve never looked back from that day. The end. Ok not the end at all! My design journey was full of twists and turns, UX and web design, design conferences. The imposter syndrome was real throughout all of it, and is still there (trust me). I’m still working in web design because I truly love it. I love learning about design patterns, how users interact with your site, ensuring the content is presented in a way your clients will respond to and understand AND get you more business.
