Distinguished Software Engineer at THG and CTO at Creedy Technology

THG is 20 years old this month and in February I'll have been involved for 20 years. This seems like a milestone at which I should reflect on my journey.      So, (those that have had the luxury of attending one of my THG Accelerator talks will know that this is my filler word of choice) behind the blue door in a single room office somewhere in Cheshire UK is where it all started. I could talk about the occasions when both (yes there were two) customer service representatives were on the phone at the same time and another customer called, and that call would ring all the other phones in the office. As a software engineer, I was also expected to answer the phone to customers, which terrified me.     I could talk about the time myself and John Gallemore were chasing a bird out of the office late one evening to stop the burglar alarm going off.   I could talk about the time trying to route a modem ( remember those ) cable through the dusty roof space to connect the server that would charge the credit cards to the telephone line (it dialled up every night).    I could talk about the time we despatched the first parcel using our in house built WMS, or the first time the order monitor in the office showed 100 orders for the day, or going on road trips to meet suppliers with John in his VW Golf and always stopping for bacon sandwiches at roadside food trucks, or questioning why a new boardroom carpet was being purchased over a development tool I had requested. Perhaps even helping pack DVDs and CDs to support the Christmas rush, or even trying to find a place to get food on Guernsey at 11pm at night.      None of that is my favourite memory of THG, that memory was meeting the girl that would become my wife. We now have 3 teenage children all thanks to THG. #20Years20Stories #WeAreTHG #THG20

Quite a legacy James. I met you on my first day at THG in April 2011. You joined the team’s standup and were discussing the solution, dressed in a well-worn, misshapen, and ill-fitting TheHut.com t-shirt. Certainly a man in his element. The Voyager WMS journey was a huge one for me. From nothing but an idea and permission from the boss, to a 9-figure £ warehouse being controlled to ship 100k orders in 24 hours. The first order shipped will still be favourite though. If you do another 20 years and I do 25, THG should just about see us both through to retirement. 😂

Love it. Working with you on projects at THG scribbling ideas on windows/walls remains a personal career highlight. Onwards!

Amazing James. Hopefully one day,I will love you dream you have created for yourself. Good luck for the next 20!

Congrats James Creedy! I’m surprised no mention of launching the Snapfulfil Integration project in THG warehouses, surely that’s better than chasing a bird to prevent a burglar alarm going off! 😉 Oh do you remember the mare you had syncing Sherlock constantly… fun times! Can’t believe it’s been 14 years… 2010 feels so long ago Hope you’re well!

Congratulations. Whenever people talk of bootstrapping their company what you achieved in the early days of THG always comes to mind. Happy to have been part of that journey.

James Creedy I thought you were nuts in 2004 leaving our small but innovative and growing software company to join start-up The Hut, competing directly with the likes of Amazon and Play! THG looks a little different these days!...really pleased it worked out for you professionally and personally. Happy birthday THG and congrats to all involved! 👏

Congratulations on 20 years with THG! Given your extensive experience and deep involvement in the company's evolution, I'm curious: What do you think are the key factors that have driven THG's success over the past two decades?
