3 key design lessons Pre-software engineering, I was becoming a house designer. Jordan Cutler asked what lessons I apply to software design from that experience. These are my key takeaways (full article in comments): 🔸 Determine what to design by focusing on customers—not engineers. • Customers don’t care about what’s inside the walls. Emphasize functionality over technical details. • What us engineers care about doesn’t matter. We design to solve the customer’s needs. 🔸 Clarify requirements by asking “Why?” • Ask “why” to ensure you’re solving the right problem. Use “so that” to understand motivations. • Figure out the reason for a customer’s requirement so you can make better decisions on their behalf. 🔸 Put just enough detail to provide direction yet be flexible to changes • Provide design direction and don't get buried in the details. • Determine which decisions we must make now and which ones we can make on the job.
