To kick off this year's Sea Air Space Exposition, Breaking Defense has an exclusive interview with Chris Kastner, CEO of HII. In 2020, Huntington Ingalls Industries, known as America's biggest shipbuilder, launched its third business unit, Mission Technologies. Two years later, the company arrived at Sea Air Space with a message: Huntington Ingalls Industries was a shipbuilder, but now, We Are HII. Today, Mission Technologies is close to matching HII's Mississippi shipyard in yearly revenue. In this interview, Kastner tells me how this transition from steadfast Navy shipbuilder to a global, all domain defense contractor came about and where he sees it going moving forward. "I do know [Mission Technologies is] going to grow faster than the shipyards, just by the nature of the business” Kastner told me. “The thirst for the technology over there is growing. It grew at 13 percent last year, which is pretty significant. Manta Ray UUV moves closer to operational readiness after successful tests. by Clarence Oxford - Los Angeles CA (SPX) In February and March 2024, the Manta Ray uncrewed underwater vehicle (UUV) prototype, developed by Northrop Grumman, underwent comprehensive in-water testing off Southern California's coast. The tests assessed the UUV's hydrodynamic performance, including submerged operations employing its various propulsion and steering modes such as buoyancy, propellers, and control surfaces. "Our successful, full-scale Manta Ray testing validates the vehicle's readiness to advance toward real-world operations after being rapidly assembled in the field from modular subsections," said Dr. Kyle Woerner, DARPA program manager for Manta Ray. "The combination of cross-country modular transportation, in-field assembly, and subsequent deployment demonstrates a first-of-kind capability for an extra-large UUV." The vehicle was transported in parts from Maryland, where it was constructed, to California for testing.
