Applying for PhD in USA as an International grad is Tantamount to conquering Mars by Elon Musk. Embarking on the journey towards a PhD in the USA is a transformative odyssey, marked by significant milestones and challenges. It begins with that pivotal first internship, where the seeds of passion and curiosity are sown. From there, navigating through the final project of graduation becomes a defining moment, a culmination of years of dedication and hard work. After that, publishing research papers becomes a pressing thing to do even to move an inch further, that adds even more depth to this academic voyage. And much before that, consistently earning A's in all subjects is equally mandatory to pursuit this daunting voyage. Even after all these, this path is not without its trials. It involves writing countless emails to professors, facing numerous rejections, and mustering the patience to persevere until that one crucial 'yes' echoes through the inbox. It's a journey that demands resilience, determination, and unwavering faith in the pursuit of knowledge. On top of these academic endeavors, there's the formidable GRE Test, a rigorous assessment akin to a mini-PhD journey in itself. Mastering reading comprehension to the level of author of Game of Thrones, deciphering convoluted text completions, and unraveling recondite passages are all part of this arduous process. But even as the challenges seem daunting, we're reminded that this journey is far from over. It's akin to navigating through hell and emerging stronger, more resilient, and ever more determined. Yet, amidst the hardships, there's a beacon of hope—a video that offers insights and guidance to make this journey a bit more manageable. Reports of two recent projects using the #JOREK code for magnetic confinement fusion research are online on arXiv now: * Bridget McGibbon looked into flow stabilization of plasma instabilities in stellarators (https://lnkd.in/eac2bCaG) * Bas Slotema studied the shielding of external magnetic error fields in tokamaks by conducting structures and by the plasma itself (https://lnkd.in/eb9SbB6x) Both projects were jointly supervised by Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik - IPP and Eindhoven University of Technology.

🙌 Georgi Pashaliev (18y old, 12th grade high school student) from Bulgaria's famed olympic Sofia High School of Mathematics Софиийска Математическа Гимназия is this year's winner of the Forbes Bulgaria #30under30 ranking in the "Science, Technology and Healthcare" category. ✅ Georgi became the youngest Bulgarian scientist to publish an article at #NeurIPS, a top AI conference. NeurIPS'2023 takes place this month in the USA. His results are based on summer internships at INSAIT supervised by Dr. Nikola Konstantinov, machine learning faculty at INSAIT. 🎞️ His story was told on several national televisions, and today he is already one of the winners of the most emblematic project of #Forbes. This summer, for aspiring astropreneurs only, this highly selective programme will pick 20 best young minds and expand their world of possibilities. How We Launched Three Rockets in One Day at SDNx 🚀 As part of my internship with SDNx, I had the chance to design and build three rockets of different sizes and launch them at the space port. It was a challenging but rewarding project that taught me a lot about rocket science, engineering, and teamwork. The first rocket was a small one that failed due to a motor malfunction on launch. We learned from our mistake and improved our design for the second rocket, which was also small but had a successful launch . The third rocket was a larger one that reached a higher altitude and speed, but had a problem with the parachute . The cord connecting the parachute and rocket body broke and the rocket crashed. We analyzed the data and found out the cause of the error. This internship was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that gave me invaluable hands-on experience and knowledge in rocket science and engineering. I'm grateful to SDNx and the space port for this amazing chance to launch my own rockets. 🚀 WISS Meets Linn Friis-Liby, R&D Engineer - Young Graduate Trainee at ESTEC, ESA! ⭐What are you working with at ESA? I’m working within Technology Programme Management, we manage some of ESA’s Space Technology R&D efforts for supporting and strengthening the European space industry. I mainly work with building data driven solutions for project management as well as researching novel technologies. It’s highly rewarding and ESTEC is a great place to be surrounded by expertise and perspectives on everything space. ⭐Why is space important? Space is important for a fair few practical reasons, such as cutting-edge technology that can be directly applied for the benefit of society. But I think the main reason for why most of us want to work with space-related areas is that it’s ceaselessly exciting and meaningful. Space encompasses philosophy, science, technology and exploration – and so provides a fundamental, intrinsic motivation that makes it very easy to find joy in the work. ⭐Which are your tips to those who want to work in the space sector? My advice would be to focus on areas that genuinely interest you. The sector is vast and varied, and there are more than just STEM roles. Research and align your interests and skills with potential roles, understand the career trajectories of professionals in the field, and don't hesitate to connect and ask questions. If you take a path that didn’t turn out as expected – try again. ⭐How do you handle setbacks and tough times in your work? You have to allow yourself room to grow as well as rely on yourself and people near you to help regulate your perspective. I don’t want any situation to impact me in such a way that I could no longer be kind and enthusiastic. Being kind includes being kind to yourself, setting an example and daring to grow. I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by wonderful people in the industry all the way from university and onwards, that have helped me find great opportunities.
