Would you like a side of mediocrity with that? I was falling out of love with hospitality. Struggling to find enthusiasm for the mediocrity that was seeping through the industry. The high street chains dressed up to look like independents, the independents more focused on the craft beer and hemp hand soap. Watching as another swanky establishment opened to platitudes of greatness and excitement but which was inevitably going to be an Instagramable hospitality vacuum with poorly thought through dishes and untrained staff. The reasons out there were many, Brexit, covid, energy, cost of living, business rates & VAT. Justifiably businesses were losing sight of what hospitality was and instead becoming campaigners for dispensation, advocating for poor service and arguing with guests in an online show of contempt. I reasoned with myself, the industry has changed, you’re part of the old guard, you’re too old, you’re not in operations anymore, you’re missing the point, old fashioned……. Then something happened. I held a workshop on business development with a good friend and “Hospitalitarian” – I’m not even sure that’s a real word but it should be. This had been developed to give a back to basics overview of the role and to try to reestablish its importance. Often BDMs in hospitality have been promoted from within, given very little training or guidance and then let go when the business starts to fail. That’s a whole other story………….. During the session some of the attendees started to rave about a new book by Will Guidara – Unreasonable Hospitality, The remarkable Power of giving people more than they expect. Guidara had worked for Danny Meyer and I had always been a big fan of his. So off I went and bought the book. I couldn’t put it down and told anybody who would listen to buy it. Not only did it reinvigorate my passion for hospitality, it confirmed that my way of thinking wasn’t old, I wasn’t a “has been” I do Know the industry, I do know what people want but more importantly the enthusiasm shown for the book during the workshop proved that this is what the teams want too. They want to give excellent service, they want to work in an environment that puts the guest first, they are natural “Hospitalitarians” but much of the time they just aren’t being given the tools, training, knowledge or parameters to be able to do so because somebody high up the chain has decided that £50k flower wall and love swing are better ways to spend the budget. So what’s next? Let’s bring back hospitality, focus on the guests, ensure our teams have the tools to go above and beyond, ensure that great service & great servers are more Instagram able than a wall with painted angel wings and almost definitely read Unreasonable Hospitality – The Remarkable Power of giving people more than they expect. This , let’s go and be the best , there is no point in spending everything on the venue fit out but not train the staff ,not look after the guests , not follow up ,not check if they had a good time or if we had everything spot on with their booking ? If we didn’t , what did we do to rectify it ? How can we streamline the process to make things more efficient, keep the guests coming back and the team engaged and ready and equipped to do their job? Be the best you can be x

I read this book about hospitality and it blew me away. I almost never make book recommendations, but I was just talking with Danielle Smith about this book at lunch and I think many others would benefit from reading Unreasonable Hospitality. The book illustrates the impact of surpassing expectations, the power of acts of service, how to approach sales and delivery from the perspective of hospitality, and how relationship development is the lynchpin of successful team building. Thanks to Ryan McKesson for introducing me to this book!

Just started Will Guidara’s “Unreasonable Hospitality” after receiving a few recommendations on here. So much from the first few chapters resonates with me. Hospitality has been a focus for us at Circle Beverage and something we continue to invest in. It’s amazing how something so simple can become a critical differentiator for your business. Here are a few key takeaways from the book so far: - Let your energy impact the people you’re talking to, as opposed to the other way around. Enthusiasm is contagious. - Go above and beyond. Guidara’s restaurants offered to feed the parking meter while you dined there. A 50 cent investment with huge returns. - Intention means that every decision, from the most obviously significant to the seemingly mundane, matters. - Whatever you do for a living, you can CHOOSE to make it a hospitality business. - Hospitality gives us the chance to make magic in a world that can certainly use more of it. Few weeks ago, I attended an event called "Women in Sustainability" hosted by @FrenchTech Event at the Palo IT coworking space, Lovely event, great organizer. But one of the speakers' "passion talk" which I raised my question during the event still lingering in my brain, whenever I see articles like this . I raised my hand ask this particular speaker. Xiao: " Hi dear speaker, I have a question here, You mentioned the word "passion" so many times, I wish to hear from your opinion that, passion is more important or exit strategy is more important. I mean feeding me day by day a proper actual market needs is more important, or what I am passionate about is more important." Speaker" Good question, to be honest, I do not even have a exit strategy for my own company, and I think you should be absolutely passionate about what you are doing, and I wish to do this for rest of my life!" Xiao: " What is you have covid another day, or something happened in personal life, that would make you not able to continue your passion?" Speaker" Hmm, ................" I am in the industry of "Passion" Many investors free dive into fitness investment without any proper forecast of the financials and market research. Again I did enjoy very much the event, met interesting people, other speakers are great, and PRACTICAL. But one little reminder for @Frenchtech event team, Please do not let speakers like this to spread around the "passion" free fall without any back up exit strategy plan and others. Because I am a 40 years woman who has being in the business world for a while, Imagine someone who is 21 years old, just entered the corporate world, Hear some sort of "expert" Frenchtech event team hired and vetted, talk at these event, Back home and think,hmmmm maybe I should borrow some personal loan to start my business ASAP. since I am super passionate about baking, dancing, fitness, etc etc whatever. Yes everybody should definitely have their own judgement on this, but please someone who is 20 or 40 or 50 years old with lots of little life experience do affect their judgement about finance a lot. I would still attend the event in the future, But not looking forward to hear 20 times of passion in a roll .(without any exit strategy planned) Data: SINGAPORE - Over the last two years, an average of around 3,840 firms were deregistered each month - figures similar to the pre-Covid-19 period of 2017 to 2019, said Minister of State for Trade and Industry Low Yen Ling. But an average of more than 5,000 new firms were registered each month over the last two years, reflecting an increase in the total number of businesses operating in Singapore, she said on Wednesday (Nov 3). In the retail sector, 8,600 businesses ceased operations from January 2020 to September this year, Minister of State for Trade and Industry Alvin Tan said.
