The last few weeks I found myself window-shopping for some equipment we need. I had the chance to get to both international and local manufacturers of the same machines. Let me just say I am impressed with what our local guys are doing. The standards and knowledge of the field are just as good, actually better than what our more established foreign companies do. But there is a glaring gap, especially for SMEs.....we don't have industrial spaces tailored for small businesses. Our big boys and international players operate from huge godowns in Industrial area or Mombasa road. The smaller players have to contend with renting our small commercial spaces, and often have to get two or more rooms just to get enough space. Display spaces are a luxury. What if, William Samoei Ruto, PhD Rigathi Gachagua Gloria Orwoba Senator Crystal Asige Rebecca Miano,EGH Dr Juma Mukhwana, PhD, CBS Tindi Mwale. we prioritized letting out spaces to SME and MSME scale industries in our newly launched industrial parks? If all I need are 200 sqm of manufacturing space, why not have this be an option for the small guys? A former sugar refinery, built in 1828 and later destroyed by a fire, it subsequently became a tobacco factory, a textile factory, a military barracks, and a shelter for the homeless. It is an important cultural symbol of the nation. The architecture firm Scapelab won the international competition for the design of the building in 2009 with the idea of completely renovating the structure, preserving only its historic shell and converting it into a multifunctional space for contemporary art. Cukrarna, with its gigantic dimensions, represents a revolutionary space in Ljubljana's cultural infrastructure. It is a modern center for art and culture that attracts many visitors with its long-term programming of exhibitions and events. 3 days ago I posted this, ranting about the lack of adequate industrial production spaces for SMEs, forcing many to operate from commercial and residential spaces while the big boys use the godowns and EPZs. Not long after that the Embakasi explosion happened. A chilling reminder of what it means for our safety. I urge the government, even as it cracks down on vendors and small industries, to consider the hardships they operate under and make provision for affordable industrial spaces in our newly launched industrial parks and EPZs. Let us not rush to crucify our SMEs before hearing them out and helping them. #industrialization #embakasiexplosion
