I work as a free-lance art historian/artist/writer/archivist/librarian/illustrator, &c. at The Frame Blog
An exhibition of De László's work is coming to the refurbished and expanded Gainsborough's House in the spring and early summer. This is exciting, not only because of the flair and skill of his portraits, but for his choice of frames. They were very important to him as part of the complete work of art, and sometimes betray, through colour marks at the sight edge, the fact that he almost invariably finished each painting in its frame, in order to bring the whole thing into harmony. If you would like to know more about this side to his work, there's a piece here: https://lnkd.in/eHN-zpem

ART MARKET: How does the art market operate? 📊 The art market is the market in which artworks are sold. There is not one but many art markets. The major distinction is between the market for "classic" works, in the sense of "classified" works, which are part of our historical heritage, and the market for current works, which we will call the contemporary art market. 💰 The contemporary art market has been growing steadily over the past 20 years, with studies showing that sales revenue has increased by 2100% between 2000 and 2020. 📍 While artists remain the first link in the market chain, two main types of intermediaries intervene between them and buyers (known as collectors): auction houses and galleries (or antique dealers). 🌓 France's 12,000 gallery owners and antique dealers account for 53% of the national market, compared with 47% for auction houses. 👑 Nevertheless, it is important to note that galleries are the key channel for purchasing and investing in artworks for 76% of contemporary art collectors. Contact us if you have any inquiries about the gallery: 📩 Send an email to Annelise if you want to know more about our artworks: [email protected] 📩 Send an email to Sarah if you want to know more about artist's selection: [email protected]

Simplicity is not an end in art, but we arrive at simplicity in spite of ourselves, as we approach the true sense of things. - Constantin Brancusi Untitled (Danseuse), c. 1912, exemplifies the gestural yet elegantly minimalistic style of Brancusi’s developing career. The artist craved spontaneity in his sculptural poses, which he practiced through drawing, taking advantage of the immediacy of the medium to capture the poses of people, particularly dancers, as in this example of twisting figure. What do synchrotron light sources have to do with art history? Here's the answer!
It’s not every day that new information about one of the most famous paintings in the world emerges. But with thanks to DESY’s PETRA III light source, we now know about some of the innovations of the 17th Century employed by Rembrandt van Rijn in his work “The Night Watch”. The giant painting, which now hangs in Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, had been initially impregnated with lead to help protect it from a damp wall on which it originally hung, something not typically done at the time. This finding came out of studies carried out at DESY – a new insight into one of the great masters.
