The fundamental driver of the energy transition which we don't talk about enough: efficiency. One of my favorite energy transition research teams, based at RMI and led by Daan Walter, Laurens Speelman and Kingsmill Bond, just published a new report. It’s about efficiency, aka the secret driving force behind the energy transition. The fundamental argument: many climate technologies are simply much more efficient than fossil fuel, and that’s why they’re poised to win. For example: ☀ Wind and solar power is 2-3x more efficient than grey electricity 🔌 Heat pumps are 3-4x more efficient than gas boilers 🚘 Electric vehicles are 2-4x more efficient than ICE cars And just to blow your mind: today’s energy system wastes about two-thirds of all energy going in. That's a waste of $4.5 trillion, or almost 5% of global GDP. As electricity is much more efficient than fossil fuels (just like plant-based foods are much more efficient than eating animals), many climate technologies are simply more efficient than fossil fuels, which require us to dig up dinosaur bones, ship them halfway across the world, and light them on fire just to create forward motion (to quote Chris Sacca). Worrying? Yes. Surprising? No. The European Union is on a trajectory to miss its 2050 climate targets, now looking at the 2060s for real impact. I've lost count of how many times I expressed my doubts about this. I am impatient to see how this industry I've been part of for the last four years will leverage the new ways of working. Because in every challenge lies a massive potential for innovation, and worldwide ports and terminals have a target on their back, especially when it comes to their visible efforts towards digitalization and sustainability. Ports powered by renewable energy, where digital technologies optimize operations and reduce emissions, setting the stage for a sustainable logistics ecosystem. This shouldn't be just a vision. This MUSTN'T be just PR. I am not an expert, merely an observer, but I'm confident the pace at which we embrace and deploy these technologies will define our legacy. Is the focus on hydrogen and carbon capture the key element? I don't know. But surely it must play a huge role in how the future looks like. One thing is certain: this moment calls for collective action, bold investments, and proven commitment from every stakeholder in the energy industry. There's no sustainability without technology. These two intersect to redefine our future. They are co-dependent. And since the news that the EU is surely not going to hit its climate target by 2050, it's kinda obvious we need more than targets.
