1 year. 12 months. 52 weeks. 365 days. 8,760 hours. 525,600 minutes. 31.54 million seconds. That is how long it has been as of today that I have been looking for a new role. A WHOLE YEAR. I feel every minute of it if not every second, and it’s heavy. Unemployment is not just about not having a job; it's about navigating a significant life transition. Over the past year, I've experienced a range of emotions—from uncertainty and frustration to hope and determination. Despite the challenges, this period has been a time for growth and self-discovery, and mental strength. Here are some things keeping me going: 1. Resilience is Key: Being resilient doesn’t mean you don’t feel the weight of challenges; it means you find ways to bounce back. I’ve faced several really tough rejections and setbacks, months long interviews, and I am still here searching. 2. Continuous Learning: I've used this time to upskill and expand my knowledge. From taking online courses to reading industry-related books, I’ve focused on becoming a better version of myself, prepared for the next opportunity. I also picked up a new skill of rehabilitating wildlife, specifically squirrels. 3.Networking Matters: Connecting with others here is a game changer. Whether it's through virtual coffee chats, LinkedIn conversations, or attending webinars, these interactions have provided support, guidance, and potential leads. 4. Mental Health is Crucial: The emotional toll of unemployment can be heavy. I've ridden the wave from the top to the bottom and sometimes didn’t think I would make it out. Put most of your focus on your mental health. 5. Embrace the Journey: While the end goal is to secure a new position, I've learned to embrace the journey itself. Granted, I don’t have much of a choice but to embrace the journey and see what I can learn from it, but embracing it versus denying it or ignoring it is beneficial. As I continue my job search, I remain optimistic and nervous about what the future holds. I am incredibly grateful for the support of my network and the opportunities I've had to grow during this time. If you have any advice, job leads, or simply want to connect, I would love to hear from you. #JobSearch #CareerGrowth #Resilience #UnemploymentJourney #NewBeginnings #Opentowork #Hireme #Newrole
Rooting for everyone in the comments. I am truly sorry for the mess that is the job market.
I’ve been out of work 1.5 years and the keys have been emotionally detaching from rejections, networking a ton, applying a ton, have a path, taking days off, and reading about what I want to do. The absolute most important thing is knowing that I’m holding out for what will come that will work best for me. It’s a numbers game and a waiting game but the right spot will appear when it happens.
Jamie! I do free resume reviews and search strategy optimization strategies as a way to give back and help. I own a recruitment firm and help companies hire so no pitch to buy my services (I have nothing to sell). If you or any one struggling out there could use a hand feel free to book a session with me here: https://calendly.com/brent-pollington/free-resume-review?month=2024-04
I'm in the same boat! we gotta keep going! The opportunity is coming!!!! Don't give up!
Jamie, resilience to me while finding a job is everything. I’m at 7,000 applied jobs and I can’t find anything but the frustration around it all only makes my drive stronger.
I feel your pain - I'm in the same boat! Hang in there good things are coming :)
This post is heart wrenching and incredibly uplifting all in one. I wish you the best and hope something cracks open soon for you.
Same position here, one year +. It is all about keeping some perspective, some days are easier than others.
Been looking for a role for nearly 17 months after being laid off from Zuora in March ‘23! Hoping I get an offer this week or so because I’ve been raising hell on social media and LinkedIn for months with my qualifications, story, and portfolio.

1moI have trouble imagining what it would be like to be job seeking for a year. One thing I'm curious about is how well you've managed to stick to what initial parameters you set for your search. Like pay, location etc or whether you've found you've had to compromise on certain things.
