Wilmington, NC. November 10, 1898. I grew up in North Carolina and went to school (K-12) and college here. But it wasn't until I was well into adulthood that I learned the significance of this place and date. This was the day that a political coup and massacre of at least 60 Black citizens took place in a city that, after the Civil War ended, had witnessed the rise of a Black middle class that included over 126,000 registered voters, doctors, lawyers, newspaper publishers, educators, and elected government officials. But white citizens and officials, both locally and across the state, who did not approve of this success of Black citizens, plotted for months to overthrow the government, destroy businesses and homes, and murder Black citizens. Why am I sharing this story here and now? Because history is known to repeat itself. And as a white woman, I feel the need to speak up and remind us all that - in the various forms it takes today - holding people back from realizing their own potential and success is wrong. Our country benefits from the richness of our diversity. I hold this belief in my heart and mind when I go to the ballot box for every election, whether local, regional, state, or national. And I think about what COULD have been in my state if this racist attack had been prevented by people who didn't speak up. The insult and injustice of the nation never reconciling centuries of debt and restitution owed goes beyond the impairment and indignity accrued and compounded through the years, and further aggravated and exacerbated by any redress given to others. The one most egregious to me is The Compensated Emancipation Act of 1862, which issued reparations to thousands of white slave owners as property compensation for freed --- lost slaves. Even members of Lincoln’s administration were recipients. But this issue is so much more than the just accounting for generations of bondage, for it is an issue of rectifying the ongoing wrongs of ever-present ills, and dismantling the intentional infrastructure of socially engineered disparities.

Black faces in high places are not going to save us. Do not be fooled by the optics. What matters is not gender, skin color, race or age but ideas, values, principles and the degree of commitment to these principles. If it is the same policies in a different package, in different window dressing it is even worse. The critical question is when the power and fundamental values clash, what will your leader choose? let tomorrow be a reminder that white america understands the importance and necessity of violent resistance—when it benefits them we even valorizes violent resistance when it aligns with white, revisionist historical narratives and interests reinforcing that violent resistance is not only necessary but also noble and foundational to the nation’s existence it also highlights a glaring double standard when contrasted with white americas sentiments towards violent resistance in Black liberation movements while white americans celebrate their own violent struggle for freedom, they position and reject resistance by Black americans and other marginalized groups as illegitimate and unjustified so just remember tomorrow is explicitly celebrating violent resistance it’s about colonists resorting to armed violence against british rule with one goal in mind: to achieve self-determination and independence so if youre rocking stars and stripes but condemn violent resistance to oppressive systems from Black folx…you’re not a patriot, you’re a hypocrite…and possibly even a white nationalist 🤷🏻♀️ image description: photos of white supremacists and white nationalists violently storming the capitol on 6 jan 2021
