Women’s History Month: Honoring Native American Women Veterans During Women’s History Month 2024, VA Office of Women’s Health is honoring Native American women Veterans. VA recognizes the impact your advocacy, contributions and sacrifices have made on our military history. Native American women Veterans have had an exemplary tradition of military service for over 200 years, overcoming adversity and serving at a higher rate compared to any other demographic, demonstrating dedication to our country and everlasting commitment to service. Today, women make up 11.3% of the Native American Veteran population (about 20,000), which is a higher percentage than women in all other demographics. https://lnkd.in/gJ4SGFbf

Breaking Hidden Barriers: While women of firsts have shattered the glass ceiling, the next generation still navigates the shards on the floor. Barriers today often manifest as insidious and subtle biases, hindering women's progress when left undetected. These barriers are not necessarily malicious but stem from ingrained assumptions. For instance, women constitute 16% of the active duty component of the United States military, with the Air Force leading at 22%. At first glance, one might assume that progress has been made to remove all barriers, but a closer look reveals nuances. What career fields do the majority of these female "Airmen" occupy? Primarily support roles like administration and medical. The highest-ranking positions often come from aviation, such as pilots. The Chief of Staff of the Air Force is likely to be someone other than a public affairs officer. Within the pilot community, women make up only 6%, further breaking down to 2% as fighter pilots—a field open to women since 1993. So, what are the issues if our senior leaders aren't represented equitably? How do we address this? ➡ First, ensure that data tells the entire story, not just fragments. Not doing this often leads to confirmation bias. Meaning we see what we want to see. ➡ Second, ask better questions. If Headquarters approves 90% of waiver X Y Z, dig deeper. How many waivers were disapproved at lower levels, escaping HQ tracking? Press to test the process. ➡ Third, initiate meaningful and consistent meetings and mentorship with individuals who don't look, think, or sound like you. Though initially uncomfortable, many leaders identify existing problems through this informal method. Skip chain meetings are critical. ➡️ Lastly, ensure changes are in a mechanism that can stand the test of time. Often when a senior leader champions a cause it can flame out when they leave that position. Let's dismantle these hidden barriers and sweep up the remaining glass off the floor. This is Space Force Junior ROTC Celebrating July 4th Through the Founding Fathers #2 This Fourth of July weekend, the Space Force JROTC enterprise wants to celebrate the nation's holiday and "amplify the Guardian Spirit" through the words of the Founding Fathers. The mission of the #SFJROTC program is to "launch #Citizens of #Character with a #space-vision" into their communities. There is no theme more common in the writings and speeches of the visionaries that set the United States of America in motion, than that of a person's character. Benjamin Franklin wrote: "I grew convinced that truth, sincerity and integrity in dealings between man and man were of the utmost importance to the felicity of life; and I formed written resolutions, which still remain in my journal book, to practice them ever while I lived." The #CadetGuardians of the nation's only Title 10 U.S. Code-mandated youth space program proclaim in their "Cadet Guardian Commitment" that "I will place my Character above all." Their mentors in the nation's newest military service state that their first core value is "Character Above All."  Both teams use the "Guardian Spirit: U.S. Space Force Handbook 1-1" as their "journal." Women veterans have played crucial roles in every conflict since the Revolutionary War, yet their contributions are often overshadowed by their male counterparts, leading to a lack of recognition and appreciation for their service. 2. Despite making up about 10% of the veteran population, women veterans face unique challenges, including gender-specific healthcare needs and higher rates of homelessness, underscoring the need for tailored support services. 3. The stories of women veterans are powerful testimonies of resilience and courage, breaking stereotypes and inspiring future generations, but these narratives are frequently underrepresented in media and historical accounts. 4. Women veterans often encounter a "double invisibility" in both the military and civilian sectors, struggling to have their service acknowledged and their transition back to civilian life supported adequately. 5. Recognizing and honoring the service of women veterans is not only a matter of justice and equality but also enriches our understanding of military history and strengthens the support networks for all veterans.
