Domestic violence situations are risky for police and individuals involved. Around 9% of officers killed on duty from 2010 to 2020 responded to domestic disturbance calls, per FBI data. Amanda Pyron, executive director of The Network: Advocating Against Domestic Violence, a Michael Reese grantee partner, says the foundation to an alternate response model is available in Chicago, where domestic violence organizations are working with a group called "Treatment Not Trauma." Their goal is to have a citywide crisis response program that dispatches properly trained mental health professionals- not armed police officers. "So in cases where there isn't an extreme risk of physical harm to a survivor, that they have an alternate pathway to receive community-based services," said Pyron.   Read the full article:

A perennial criticism by anti-police reformers is the police are the wrong response to citizens in crisis. Recent conversations with officers and deputies from different parts of the country found they wish there was a solution that would take these cases off their call handling lists.
