Jane Sarasohn-Kahn’s Post

AI can help improve #healthequity if and only if there are regulatory guardrails that support accountability, transparency, and bake in privacy-by-design. In today's Health Populi blog, I explore a call-to-action published by the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) exploring the opportunities and challenges of improving health equity using #AI. One useful framework was developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) whose AI Strategy is built on four pillars: the workforce, innovation and R&D, democratizing tools and resources, and promoting trust. Among several recommendations, I pull out the "promoting trust" workflow which is key for under-served patients -- some of whom have a legitimate history of a lack of trust with the American health care system. To assure an equitable and really useful AI-informed clinical decision support platform, AI wants to devour lots of data that's diverse and inclusive. But patients -- as #healthcitizens -- need to be able to trust the health care ecosystem stakeholders with whom folks share their personal health data. That's why legislation that speaks to #algorithmicbias as well as comprehensive privacy laws are so important. Thanks to the scientists of the FAS for their commitment to striving for a safer and more equitable world, since 1945. Jan Oldenburg Jane Sarasohn-Kahn I think it's safe to say that, fair or not, a majority of patients these days are coming from a #lackoftrust position, and when you start to think about #buildingtrust, you are starting from a negative position, not a neutral position. I would love to see not just regulatory guardrails, but #medicalethicists involved in the development of any framework that looks to #improvetrust, but especially those that involve AI. Jane, thank you for your insights in your recent blog post. Your discussion on how AI can improve health equity, particularly with the implementation of ethical and accountable frameworks, was enlightening. It's impressive how the FAS emphasizes the need for regulatory frameworks and investments in AI accessibility to reduce health disparities. The point about Medicare and Medicaid's role in scaling responsible AI solutions is particularly noteworthy. #HealthEquity #AIinHealthcare #DigitalHealth
