One-half of older Americans 50+ are feeling financially strained -- and what #Project2025 could mean for Medicare and Social Security. In today's Health Populi blog, I explore the July/August 2024 study among people 50+ from University of Michigan's National Poll on Healthy Aging. The monthly study this round focuses on Americans who are 50 and over and their financial health. One-half of older people in the U.S. have cut their household costs in some way in the past year. Those at most-risk for financial cutbacks in the past year were older women and people of color, as well as people with multiple chronic conditions and those dealing with #mentalhealth issues. In the Hot Points of the blog, I weave in my reading of the "General Welfare" chapter of Project 2025, the 922-page report from The Heritage Foundation and other organizations which provide a blueprint for a "Presidential Transition" following the 2024 U.S. Presidential election. The document speaks to positions on public health, women's health, LGBTQ+ health, and of course spending on Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Specifically, Project 2025 would look to raise retirement age to 70, and to enroll all new Medicare enrollees into #MedicareAdvantage plans....among other policy prescriptions. AI can help improve #healthequity if and only if there are regulatory guardrails that support accountability, transparency, and bake in privacy-by-design. In today's Health Populi blog, I explore a call-to-action published by the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) exploring the opportunities and challenges of improving health equity using #AI. One useful framework was developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) whose AI Strategy is built on four pillars: the workforce, innovation and R&D, democratizing tools and resources, and promoting trust. Among several recommendations, I pull out the "promoting trust" workflow which is key for under-served patients -- some of whom have a legitimate history of a lack of trust with the American health care system. To assure an equitable and really useful AI-informed clinical decision support platform, AI wants to devour lots of data that's diverse and inclusive. But patients -- as #healthcitizens -- need to be able to trust the health care ecosystem stakeholders with whom folks share their personal health data. That's why legislation that speaks to #algorithmicbias as well as comprehensive privacy laws are so important. Thanks to the scientists of the FAS for their commitment to striving for a safer and more equitable world, since 1945. "Listen to me:" personalization in health care starts with taking patients' voices seriously. The latest The Beryl Institute + Ipsos PX Pulse survey conducted among U.S. consumers captures #healthconsumers' perspectives on their patient experience -- led by the need to be heard, to be delivered clear communications for care, and to have their pain taken seriously -- among other factors that translate into peoples' engagement with providers. In today's Health Populi blog, I discuss the insights revealed in this 15th update of the survey, including the veracity of negative experience inspiring more (negative) word-of-mouth to family and friends versus positive experience which yields less positive influence in patients' social networks. More in the post - with appreciation to the researchers for continuing to track consumers' perspectives on their #healthcare experience and its importance in keeping true to the #QuintupleAim. My favorite quote from the report: "The opportunities healthcare has in front of it are significant and require new and forward-thinking conversations….In keeping things simple, in honoring the person in front of us, and then in executive on plans to reinforce those fundamentals.” cc Stacy Hurt 🌻 Grace Cordovano, PhD, BCPA This has your spirits all over.... #ptexp #UXhealth #patientengagement #patientexperience #healthdesign #loyalty #digitalhealth https://lnkd.in/eRG4J3eF

At least one-half of U.S. health care organizations have experienced a data breach, one-third in the last 3 years. As the footprint of health care expands from the hospital and doctor's office to the home, cyber-threats and ransomware breaches add to the risk-exposure across the health/care ecosystem. Those risks will only grow in our future health care scenarios. In today's Health Populi blog, we re-convene the third of three parts of my cybersecurity-and-healthcare conversation with Richard Kaufmann, CISO of Amedisys, rounding out our wide-ranging discussion by looking at the futures of cyber-sec in health care and how we can best manage the risks...attending to the patient at the center of care, everywhere. To set our stage for context, I connect some dots from several relevant studies including: - Software Advice's 2024 Healthcare Data Security Survey - Deloitte's look into the future of #cybersec in healthcare - The World Economic Forum's vision for cybersecurity in the community's social fabric, and, - Greg Garcia's observations on cybersec in health care and #publichealth. Thanks to Microsoft's George Jones and Stacey Heinonen for matching me up with Richard for this important conversation. I learned so much from Richard's experience and wisdom and empathetic approach to the patients he and his organization ultimately serve. cc David Reppond Deven McGraw David Harlow Matthew Fisher Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) HIMSS HLTH American Hospital Association Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) AHIMA Ponemon Institute #UXhealth #healthdesign #healthsecurity #healthdata #privacy #security #cybersecurity #healthsecurity #homecare #palliativecare #infosec #trust #healthconsumers #ptexp https://lnkd.in/eP9xFieD

Time for an update on U.S. health consumers as medical bill payers -- with many research reports and forecasts re-casting the patient-as-payer for health care. In today's Health Populi blog, I weave together several new studies updating our picture of American consumers' household budgets seeing medical bills crowding out other spending....featuring, - Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Rohit Chopra expanding the concept of banning #medicaldebt from peoples' credit scores - The latest Aflac 2023-24 Workforces Report on #employeebenefits, showing eroding benefits for some companies' plans and more financial burden on employees in the forms of higher premium shares and out-of-pocket costs - A new poll from University of Chicago and NORC at the University of Chicago revealing most Americans favor forgiving medical debt than #studentdebt - The new Congressional Budget Office forecast published in Health Affairs with an update on growing #uninsurance and #Medicare enrollment to 2034, and - a new National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) paper asking "who pays for rising health care prices?" from Zarek Brot-Goldberg and Lev Klarnet et al -- with #deathsofdespair outcomes. Connecting the dots, we have continued evidence that #financialwellbeing and employment are central to social drivers/determinants of health (#SDoH). #medicalbills #healtheconomics #healthiswealth #socialdeterminants #homeeconomics #homecare #patientexp #ptexp #financialhealth #healthplans #healthinsurance AHIP SHRM American Psychological Association American Hospital Association Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA)

Most U.S. consumers are making food purchase decisions based on various (perceived and hoped-for) health benefits, such as boosting energy, managing gut and heart-health, and aging healthfully. You'll learn more updating your perspectives on #foodasmedicine from the 19th annual International Food Information Council (IFIC) study into Food and Health 2024, which I cover in detail in the latest Health Populi blog. New to this year's study are expanded insights into U.S. consumers' views on #weightloss drugs (the #GLP1s etc.) and important perspectives on peoples' sense of #financialhealth and #stress -- which can impact consumers' food purchases (think: snacking, emotional eating, and of course prices at the #grocerystore). I connect the dots on physical and fiscal health, as well as weave in the latest USDA study on #foodsecurity and #SNAP benefits in FY2023. Also, you'll discover some good data points on consumers growing use of #digitalhealth and #healthapps along with #AI to inform food and nutrition decision making. Health is wealth and wealth, health, we continue to learn -- and food is part of that equation. How can we deliver more health care to more people? That's the question on Philips' mind for this year's annual 2024 Future Care Index report, based on research conducted in 14 countries among health care leaders. The calls-to-action for more and better care for more people fall into three workflows: 1. Address burnout 2. Bridge insights (esp. deploying ethical and well intentioned AI), and 3. Act on sustainability -- for both financial and environmental goals. In today's Health Populi blog, I discuss this year's report and weave into the Hot Points conclusion the importance of design for omnichannel health care, everywhere. Most Americans, both older AND younger, are worried about the future of Medicare and Social Security as they look to aging in the U.S. In today's Health Populi blog, we build a bridge across generations when it comes to caring about financial well-being and access to health care in an aging America. The latest 2024 Healthcare in America Report from West Health and Gallup explores Americans' perspectives on social and health care systems in the country -- finding anxiety and stress among young health citizens as well as older people. This is a message that's been overlooked in U.S. political dialogue and messaging: that younger people are concerned about #Medicare and #SocialSecurity for themselves as they look to age in America, but also care for the security of grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles, and #aging friends and colleagues in their community. I weave in a letter I received on the day I wrote this post from AARP that speaks to the security of Medicare and Social Security as an example of messaging to people 50+ -- AARP's constituency -- but really, the message will resonate with people under 50 as well. This is one thread underlying our #scenarioplanning panel at #AHIP2024 looking into the future of the health consumer in 2030 with Don Antonucci of Providence, David Rhew, M.D. of Microsoft, and Marc R. Watkins, M.D. of Kroger Health / Kroger. The issue of the patient-as-payer, and whether a public sector safety net of Medicare and Social Security will be resilient over the next six years, is a key uncertainty for 2030 -- the year when every Boomer turning 65 will achieve that age. Thanks to the researchers at West Health and Gallup for their ongoing investment in understanding U.S. #healthcare and #healthcitizens.
