Thank you Pedro Resende for another thoughtful post! 💡 This topic is really important for me 🙏 I believe nowadays the transition between #academia and #industry is increasingly dynamic, with professional careers no longer remaining stagnant. However, moving to the industry is not a simple task. As #researchers, we are inherently formatted for #problemsolving through our extensive experience in data science and research methodologies. Transitioning requires us to step out of our comfort zone and adapt to an entirely different approach to problem-solving - one that is practical and industry-oriented. On the #corporate side, I believe #hiring individuals from academia can be beneficial. Scientists bring a unique mindset and different approaches to problem-solving that can bring some fresh perspectives into the industry. 🚀 The synergy between academia and industry, though challenging, is a win-win. It not only broadens the horizons of researchers but also provides the industry with invaluable insights and #innovative problem-solving strategies. This dynamic is essential for #progress and #innovation in both realms.

In 2006, professors told me that moving from academia to industry was a path of no return❗ At the time, I was applying to PhD programs but none of them accepted me. 😥 So I decided to try and apply for industry jobs. All professors I talked to told me the same thing: "If you go, you will never be able to come back." They scared me. I wanted to stay in academia and I was just looking for industry jobs to get a job and a different experience. But It turns out my professors were wrong. ❌ I moved to the UK and joined Pfizer I came back, did my PhD, and have been in academia for 15+ years now. Now, I run Chaperone, my own company, and my own independent line of research at i3S - Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde. The takeaway lessons here are: 1) You can move from academia to industry and vice-versa. 2) Don't always listen to your professors. 3) Always look for unbiased career support. 4) Society will always benefit from allowing scientists to make contributions outside the lab.
