Is AI deceiving us to believe it can do more than it actually can? That was one of the questions we discussed at our online session with Pia Lauritzen, PhD in our network today. And what a thought-provoking session this was. Pia took us beyond the AI hype and talked about the questions we need to ask ourselves when and before we start using AI. Here are a few takeaways that have been co-created with two of our AI colleagues VEED.IO (wrote a blog based on the online session) and ChatGPT (wrote a resume from Veeds blog): 🤔 AI is created not to know or understand but to mimic. It creates an illusion of comprehension, cleverly designed to make us believe in its 'intelligence.' 🎭 The mimicry trap: The core of AI is imitation. It answers, it responds, but without grasping the essence of inquiry. This raises a vital question: Are we mistaking AI's mimicry for understanding? ❓ Questioning AI: In a world where AI 'answers,' we must not forget the power of human inquiry. Questions drive us, define our curiosity, and lead to true discovery. AI, however, lacks this quest for knowledge. 🧠 Human Insight vs. AI Output: Remembering this distinction is important as we integrate AI into our lives and workspaces. AI offers speed and efficiency, but our human insight and questioning bring depth and meaning. 🛑 Beware of overreliance on AI: The efficiency of AI can be seductive, leading to an overreliance that might overshadow the necessity of critical thinking and the richness of human interaction. 📢Interacting with #generativeai: your common sense makes the difference! As a Humanity & Technology consultant I often hear worries from people about how generative AI might affect their job prospects. Generative AI can automate routine tasks and create content, but that does not mean that humans do not have unique skills that are vital for working with AI. These are called 21st century skills and they include creativity, critical thinking, information literacy, and problem-solving. In fact, generative AI needs human skills to work well and responsibly. In this post, I will focus on one human skill in particular: common sense. Common sense is a key human skill when using generative AI. It involves the ability to understand and act suitably in everyday situations, based on practical knowledge and experience. While generative AI can produce amazing results, it can also generate content that may not always be trustworthy, accurate, unbiased, or ethical. For this reason, it is essential to apply your own common sense. Since common sense is a complex cognitive skill, developed through life experiences, and exposure to different situations, there are several ways to develop and improve your common sense skills. Here are some things that you can do: 👀 Observe and analyze: Pay close attention to the world around you. Observe how people navigate various situations, solve problems, and make decisions. Actively analyze the cause-and-effect relationships in everyday events, to develop a deeper understanding of how things work. 🔍 Seek diverse experiences: exposure to a wide range of experiences widens your perspective and helps develop common sense. Engage in activities that challenge your thinking and interact with people from different backgrounds, to gain insights into different ways of approaching problems. 📔 Read widely: reading exposes you to different scenarios, characters, and situations. Fiction and non-fiction alike can provide valuable insights into human behavior, decision-making, and the consequences of various actions, contributing to the development of common sense. 🌟 Problem-solving exercises: Actively engage in problem-solving exercises. These can range from puzzles and logical games to real-world challenges. Practice identifying key elements of a problem, considering alternative solutions, and evaluating the potential outcomes. ✍ Reflect on past experiences: reflecting on your past experiences allows you to extract lessons and insights. Consider situations where your judgment was successful or where there might have been room for improvement. This self-reflection helps refine your common sense over time. To conclude, I strongly suggest this excellent TED Talk by Yejin Choi, a “must watch” when you start to use generative AI or when you think about rolling it out in your organization. AI is great for idea generation, but are these ideas any good? A recent Harvard Business Review article identifies tips for leveraging #AI, #creativity, and problem solving: 1) Be precise about the problem you want to solve, 2) Make time for individual brainstorming without the bot, 3) Rigorously train the AI, 4) Approach AI as an ongoing conversation partner, not an oracle, and 5) Have someone outside the team facilitate the final decision.

Transparency has always been a cornerstone of my professional values and it plays out in a number of different ways. It means falling on my sword without question. It means asking a tough question that nobody else will, but should. & more recently...It means pointing out when I've used AI 🤣 I've done it twice today already, and it feels so silly! It seems as if the current discourse is you are falling behind if you aren't figuring out how to use it in your work, yet it also feels like cheating, so I don't want to take credit for it either! If everyone is doing it though, as I assume, do we need to point it out? Bottom line: Transparency fosters trust and understanding. Admitting (or maybe we're just mentioning 🤔) the use of AI should not be about diminishing our skills but recognizing that collaboration with technology can elevate our work to new heights.
