Some news from me to close out February… In July, I expected to be celebrating 25 years with Ally. Instead, I will be joining nearly 300 coworkers from the Ally Lending Point of Sale business unit that are transitioning to Synchrony on March 1 as part of a sale announced in January. More to come later on my new opportunity with Synchrony, for which I am thrilled to be part of. For now, I am reflecting back on my unique journey at Ally which wraps up tomorrow. When I joined the company in 1999 in my hometown of Eugene, Oregon, I didn’t know what to expect. After a promotion to Team Leader later that year, I thought “if I work hard and commit myself here, maybe I can work my way up to a manager role in this office.” Little did I know that my commitment would eventually lead to assignments in new cities across not only the US, but around the world. Like Pitbull…I’m Mr Worldwide. I’ve worked out of offices in 5 states and spent time at vendor sites in 6 countries, including a 4 month assignment in Philippines that turned into an amazing 10 years of my career (and most importantly where I met my wife and where our 2 oldest sons were born). If I played baseball, my walk-up song would be Johnny Cash’s “I’ve Been Everywhere.” The places I’ve been, and the people I’ve met in this career have made such an impact personally. From learning the Auto Finance business on the phone helping customers, spending 17 years in Auto Servicing and Collections, transitioning to Deposits Customer Care, and the past 15 months managing Collections for Lending, which resulted in our move last year to Charlotte, have kept me challenged and energized. I’m fortunate to have had excellent and supportive managers throughout who provided numerous opportunities to develop. I worked with peers that were passionate and professional while making a job fun. I am proud to have led teams and departments that did transformative work helping customers, in the process learning far more lessons from my team members than I ever was able to teach them. Helping to hire and train hundreds of employees over the years was a challenging reward, but seeing team members progress in their careers within Ally and elsewhere is awesome. It’s a thrill to look back on 24+ years and find echoes of my work and people that were important to me still driving success at Ally. The company is so different than when I started, but the key values of taking care of employees and customers remain. I will bring the “Do it Right” mindset with me on my new journey. I’m so thankful to everyone that’s impacted me during this ride. Making life-long connections and friendships wherever I’ve traveled and worked. Those experiences remain with me always. 💜
