Colonial Hangovers: Time to Sober Up! There is much to celebrate and commemorate when we speak of emancipation. As a blessed collective society, we join with our fellow citizens in each momentous occasion in history, expressing solidarity, goodwill, joy, happiness, or peacefulness, depending on the particular day. Our growth as a nation is highly dependent upon our development and how we perceive these celebrations. We must take a keen interest in what we have all inherited from colonial powers and be the driving force to relinquish practices that detract from our onward development. This conversation has been presented in several different forms, mostly concerning the removal of key symbols of our historical past and the rebranding of names that have been familiar to us since childhood. Admittedly, communications theory dictates that symbols play a vital role in how we understand messages. However, changing the symbol may not bring about the desired change unless there is a willingness to re-socialize, re-think, re-learn, implement, and practice new values and behaviors. Colonial administrations established bureaucratic structures primarily designed to serve the interests of the colonial powers rather than the local population. These structures have been evolving, but the question remains: are they evolving in the right direction? The colonial focus on resource extraction and economic exploitation meant there was little investment in developing robust and efficient public services for the local populace. This focus arguably persists today, with diversification in our economic landscape being non-apparent and our annual budget allocations still heavily reliant on the energy industry. The institutional culture and practices established during colonial times, including hierarchical management styles and lack of accountability, have persisted and contributed to ongoing inefficiencies. For instance, common workplace phrases like "Who, me?", "I didn't do it," and "That's not my work" reflect a lack of accountability that can be traced back to colonial-era practices. Many factors from that period in our history continue to plague our society in various ways. Overcoming these challenges will not happen overnight and requires a concerted effort from both our leaders and ourselves to make changes that allow us to truly escape the shadows of colonialism that affect us almost every day. #Emancipation #OvercomingColonialism #NationalDevelopment

Things are getting weird here in America. No matter what your opinion is on any of the contentious issues hitting us at a daily, dizzying speed, I think we can all agree on that. But have we been here before? Was this all written in the cards? "The Fourth Turning',” written by Neil Howe and William Strauss in 1997, explores how the American experiment has played out over the centuries in four distinct turnings: High, Awakening, Unraveling, and Crisis. Right now we’re in a crisis. But just as wildfire is a necessary element in certain ecosystems, crisis can play a role in rebuilding institutions, prioritizing civic engagement, and fulfilling our collective destiny.
