According to the company’s president and CEO, Josh Weinstein, the service is a game-changer for the company’s onboard connectivity. “We completed the rollout of Starlink this quarter, another revenue uplift opportunity and a real game-changer for our onboard connectivity experience, enabling us to deliver the same high-speed Wi-Fi service available on land throughout our fleet,” he said during the company’s second quarter earnings call. “Not only does this technology provide our guests with more flexibility to stay connected, it enables our crew to stay in touch with friends and loved ones, and it enhances our onboard operational systems, a win-win-win,” he added. Weinstein said that the enhanced connectivity is part of Carnival Corporation’s strategy for its onboard experience, which is leading the company to reinvest in bandwidth. “We’re spending more on bandwidth than we ever have, and it’s generating outsized returns because people love the service. It’s land like and it’s something people are willing to pay for,” he explained. “So, there’s examples up and down the P&L where we’re very happy to reinvest to drive the right behaviors to get the revenue that we’re looking for.” Carnival Corporation began its fleetwide rollout of Starlink in December 2022 with Carnival Cruise Line and AIDA Cruises ships. The company’s other brands, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Seabourn, P&O Cruises Australia, Costa Cruises, P&O Cruises UK and Cunard, followed later. According to the company, the Starlink service allows guests to use the high-speed, low-latency connectivity to stay connected while onboard, streaming content and working remotely. Brands like Holland America Line announced a strong surge in guest satisfaction after the introduction of the service. Seabourn also highlighted positive feedback about the service, which is also available in remote parts of the world onboard its two expedition ships."

One of the major impediments to implementing satellite based internet on small commuter aircraft is the sheer size of the antenna hump, which doesn’t bother, say, a 737. But it becomes a significant drag component on commuter and business jets. As such, cellular-based air to ground connections as a primary internet link has hung on in these smaller jets. Until SpaceX came along. Starlink’s electronically steerable antenna is considerably smaller than the usual Ka/Ku setup found on mainline fleets. And when you only have to share that Starlink connection (Ka-band) with 10-15 people, that’s likely going to result in a fantastic user experience. When it comes down to it, satellite isn’t much different than WiFi - if you can get spatial reuse of your spectrum, you end up with considerably more capacity. LEO satellites like Starlink typically cover an area of a few hundred square miles, while GEO satellites theoretically cover up to half the planet. Electronically steerable antenna arrays (or phased arrays) use fancy math to focus the beam where it needs to go, and nowhere else, without moving parts that take a brief moment to get into place, and are prone to mechanical failure. This virtual beam alignment can be done from one transmission to the next, which is very helpful when both satellite and receiver are in motion. WiFi performs a similar trick with beam forming (first implemented by Ruckus in their 802.11n hardware, and later integrated into the 802.11 standard with the 2012 rollup (as part of the .11ac amendment). This is a key part of MU-MIMO (which I have yet to see actually happen in the real world) and MRC which uses math to tease out more signal by computing out noise. Juniper’s Mist product also uses beam forming magic like this on the Bluetooth radios in their APs, allowing it to compute angle of arrival and to send out virtual beacons

OPUL Jets upgrades fleet with SpaceX’s Starlink Aviation connectivity Private jet charter provider OPUL Jets is ungrading its fleet with SpaceX’s Starlink Aviation connectivity system. Revealing the new partnership at the European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE) 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland, the upgrade will equip OPUL Jets’ compatible fleet with the latest in satellite internet technology, said the company. “Integrating Starlink technology into our fleet represents a transformative step for OPUL Jets and places us among the leading private jet companies globally,” said Harry Ackerman, group CEO. “Our commitment to providing a superior travel experience aligns perfectly with the capabilities of Starlink, ensuring that our passengers can stay connected to what matters most, wherever they are in the world.” The Starlink system promises download speeds ranging from 40-220 Mbps and upload speeds of 8-25 Mbps, with latency under 99 milliseconds. This allows passengers to stay connected whether they’re conducting business, watching live events, or just browsing the web. “With this installation, OPUL Jets passengers can enjoy high-speed internet with low-latency and seamless access to streaming, live sports, movies and more during flights,” claims the charter company. The charter provider’s fleet includes Bombardier mid-size, super mid-size, and ultra-long-range jets operating from bases in London, Dubai, Mumbai, and the Isle of Man. First to receive the Starlink system will be company’s Bombardier Global Express XRS, which has an intercontinental range of 6,500nm. No airline in Europe offers an easy way to access the internet onboard the aircraft. It's either expensive, non-operational (yes, this happened to me!), or full of annoying steps to be taken on their login pages so you end up connecting to the internet by the time your aircraft lands. airBaltic aims to be the first in Europe to offer free, high-speed, and without-hassle (no login pages!) WiFi connection onboard its fleet of A220s. In an interview with Simple Flying, the carrier's CEO reiterated the importance of being connected at all times, even when you're at an altitude of 35,000 feet. Will free inflight Wi-Fi become the norm soon? A number of airlines are rolling out free inflight connectivity. 🛜 I did a long-haul flight last month where Wi-Fi was available, but not free for all passengers. While the cost was not that high, I skipped connecting, instead using the inflight entertainment and what I had downloaded on my device. I have been looking into what is being rolled out (along with a curiosity on the use of LEO satellites on planes) and I see there are a number of airlines trialing or rolling out increased bandwidth and free Wi-Fi.   With so many people in the air at any given time, it will be interesting to see how this will change the inflight experience, especially for longer flights. It should enhance the experience, although I'm sure some like begin forced to disconnect for a few hours.   Some of the airlines and in-flight entertainment companies working on this:   - Delta Airlines have been swapping out Intersat for Viasat across their fleet to provide free inflight Wi-Fi, including the use of the new ViaSat-3 constellation of GEO satellites. The ViaSat-3 will have a satellite for the Americas, EMEA and Asia-Pacific and will have hundreds of ground stations. - Qatar Airways will use SpaceX's Starlink to enable free Wi-Fi onboard specific aircraft and routes. - Hawaiian Airlines, a major US airline, will use Starlink to enable free Wi-Fi onboard. In total, Hawaiian expects to add Starlink to 18 of the A321 jets and 24 of its A330 aircraft later this year.   - Air New Zealand is trialing Starlink to introduce free Wi-Fi on its domestic aircraft, and based on the trial will decide on potentially rolling out the solution across the fleet.   - JetBlue plane have been offering free Wi-Fi over Viasat for a number of years.   - Panasonic Avionics Corporation (PAC), who provide inflight entertainment systems, is expanding its GEO network along with using OneWeb’s LEO service to provide inflight Wi-Fi (note they reference a preference with Eutelsat OneWeb over SpaceX due to consistency of service). #connectivity #aviation #satellitecommunications #wifi
