New analysis: What will it cost to bring new #energy resources on to the electric grid? EPSA today released a new analysis prepared by Robert Kaineg at FTI Consulting, which represents an effort to better capture the “full-cycle” levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), including the impact of regional costs, interconnection costs, curtailment costs, and the cost of ensuring that all units can provide an equivalent level of resource adequacy to the grid.  "The future of our grid depends on balancing reliability, cost, and emissions. As someone deeply invested in the journey towards a more sustainable world, I'm thrilled to share that the U.S. is set to retire just 5.2 GW of electric generating capacity in 2024, the least since 2008, with coal and natural gas making up 91% of these retirements. This remarkable 62% decrease from last year signals a pivotal shift towards cleaner energy sources. However, while this progress is commendable, I believe we can accelerate this transition even further. I was heartened to read of the recent advancements in Australia's energy sector, which mark a significant shift towards a sustainable future. The National Electricity Market's latest roadmap, as outlined in the 2024 Integrated System Plan, reveals quite a transformative journey for Australia, was our nation transitions from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. The 2024 plan emphasises the need to increase the grid's firming capacity fourfold, a crucial step in stabilising the fluctuations that are presently inherent in renewable energy production and minimising the risk of power shortages for Australian residential and industrial consumers. This enhancement of firming capacity will be achieved through the integration of large-scale battery systems, pumped hydroelectric storage, and the collective use of consumer batteries forming virtual power plants. Additionally, the plan includes the use of gas-powered generation, a point which may draw some debate. Australia's 2024 energy strategy represents a major leap in sustainable energy globally. Prioritizing the end of coal use, a substantial rise in renewable capacity, and improved grid stability with cutting-edge technology, it showcases Australia's dedication to a greener future. This challenging transformation aligns with post #COP28UAE climate change efforts and will likely inspire and drive similar global actions, underscoring the need for united efforts.
