Today marks the one-year anniversary of the fatal parking garage collapse that occurred in Lower Manhattan, and DOB is urging property owners to prioritize safety and make sure that their initial observation reports for parking structures are turned in on time (on or before August 1, 2024).
Following the collapse on Ann Street, DOB personnel spent the subsequent months inspecting parking structures throughout all five boroughs, shuttering a few that showed signs of being in hazardous condition.
To catch potential structural issues BEFORE they become a problem, the city’s Periodic Inspection of Parking Structures (PIPS) program mandates comprehensive structural inspections, empowering owners to address potential hazards proactively.
Owners of parking structures in Upper Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island must submit initial reports to DOB by August 1. Let’s work together to catch issues early and prioritize safety in our communities.
