🌧️ Adequate road maintenance is crucial, yet it’s a challenge for Governments to keep up to the needs of our aged road network, especially since major flood events are becoming the new norm. Earlier this week the #GrattanInstitute drew attention to the need for major reforms in funding for the maintenance of local government roads. Leading up to World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on Sunday, it’s important we all start conversations with decision makers and advocate for long-term, durable road maintenance strategies so that there are safe road surfaces for all riders and drivers. More durable road patching is a start – every pothole is a new risk to people using our roads, but in particular for #motorcyclesafety and #bikesafety. Prior to the 1973 Oil Embargo shaking the world, highway policies were the same in the US, Sweden, and Denmark. All favored higher speeds. All had the same safety record. All required the same oil use of 43 megawatt-hours per person per year. Following the Embargo US policies continued with sprawl. Sweden/Denmark shifted to make streets safe for commerce, pedestrians, and bikes cutting per person oil use to 60% below the US and road-kills of bike riders and pedestrians to 400% below the US. Every day on UK roads, five people are killed, and around 80 are seriously injured. On the Road Intelligence platform, we found a roundabout on Wilstead Bypass with 41 near-miss incidents occurring in the last three months. This is because: 🛑Vehicles are driving over 40km/h when approaching or on the roundabout; 🚗Combine this with the steering action required to enter and exit the roundabout; 🚨Creates g-forces of over 0.4g, above safe thresholds. Connected Vehicle data can be helpful in mapping where non-fatal crashes occur to encourage early intervention and prevent more severe crashes in future.
