Take a look at the inspiring narrative that led Kaylie to achieve remarkable milestones: ⚉How did your career journey begin in this field, and what steps have you taken to reach your current position? “I started in recruiting right out of college and was lucky enough to be referred by a Swooner in our San Diego office. My first position was a Professional Recruiter supporting our West Coast accounts; from there, I worked hard, performed as best I could, and often met with mentors to make an informed decision about where I wanted to take my career, ultimately landing in a leadership position.” ⚉What key milestones or achievements have you accomplished during your career that you are most proud of? “I am most proud of my consistency throughout my career at Swoon – immersing myself in each role, learning as much as possible about recruiting, and understanding first-hand the challenges that come with staffing has allowed me to relate to my team and be a stronger leader.” ⚉What advice would you give to someone who aspires to follow a similar career path? “Management is very different than any role I’ve held previously – and the most rewarding! If you have a drive to coach and teach others, then the management path is an excellent option for you. My advice would be to gather as much information about your industry and various roles at your company as you can before moving into a leadership position so that you understand how the business works at a high level. This will allow you to best support and advise your team as well as knowledgeably guide them through difficult situations.”

It’s hard to believe it’s almost been a year since I started this amazing job back in June. Initially, taking the leap was nerve-wracking, considering the distance from my hometown, family, and friends. Yet, it’s undoubtedly been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’ve been fortunate to join a team with exceptional leadership and an unwavering commitment to excellence and I’m thankful Tommy Wood and Jarrett Darmstatter took a chance on me. I’ve always enjoyed challenging myself with trying to become comfortable with the uncomfortable or the “Grind” as many as my former college wrestling teammates would refer to it. The knowledge and skills I’ve acquired have surpassed my expectations, from basic operating room protocols to detailed product features. I recall when I was first diving into this role, my main worries revolved around the longest screw in our caddies and figuring out which color coordinated with each size. What excites me most is the continual opportunity for growth and learning. There’s still much ground to cover, from developing existing relationships to expanding my expertise in surgical procedures and product knowledge. Hustle and patience are key in this field, traits I’ve come to value deeply. I’m truly thankful for the opportunity to engage in this role daily, striving for personal growth while delivering top-notch services to our customers. I couldn’t imagine embarking on this journey with anyone other than Jarrett Darmstatter, Sione Tupou, and Brendan Keady. Within the community of Smith+Nephew’s culture, there’s a prevailing notion: pressure is a privilege. I’m confident that my team and I not only embrace but embody this pressure, driving us towards excellence. While my career has just begun there are three key takeaways I have found to be some of the most important so far. 1.) The importance of surrounding oneself with a supportive team and network. 2.) Treat others how you would want to be treated…being respectful and considerate goes a long way. 3.) Developing resilience and learning to take constructive criticism in stride are essential for personal and professional growth. It’s all part of the journey towards success in this dynamic industry.

I feel like I’ve been braggin on our kids a bunch lately, but it’s hard not to! Both of them earned and were awarded All-Around MVP’s for their softball and baseball teams this spring. Canaan won 1st in class in the county stock show and Lawson qualified and then took 2nd in his last ever mutton bustin efforts at the Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo. And the cool thing is, they understand and acknowledge who the glory belongs to! These things have opened up some deeper dialogue with them both about what to expect next, and how it translates into life and careers. Inky Johnson says, “When talent meets talent, talent is no longer enough.” Then it becomes about mindset, discipline, heart and desire, etc., and working on your craft when nobody else is watching. In life, somebody is always going to be better, someone is always going to be gunning for you, and outcomes ain’t always fair.
