Apply for free IFEM event registration
To enhance Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging, IFEM has developed a Pay-It-Forward Initiative for our online events.
We understand that Emergency Physicians, Trainees and other Emergency Medical Care Workers from low-income countries aren’t always financially able to attend our events.
To ensure our events are more accessible, each online IFEM event includes a pay-it-forward option when registering, enabling each registrant to purchase extra tickets for us to distribute to others.
Our pay-it-forward initiative requires applicants to fit into one of the three categories below. For each event it is first come first serve, and once all pay-it-forward tickets are filled, any applicants who weren’t successful will automatically be transferred to our next event.
We are currently calling for applicants for our Across the Life Spectrum: Procedural Sedation in the ED on 28 September 2023.

Dear GME Community,
It's that time of year again—a season of excitement, anticipation, and new beginnings., not just for us but new interns as well. As these new doctors transition from medical students to residents, they embark on a journey filled with opportunities and challenges.
Setting the Tone for Success
As leaders and mentors, it is our responsibility to foster a welcoming and supportive environment. Here are a few ways we can ensure a smooth transition for our new residents:
1. **Be Approachable and Available:** Encourage open communication and make it clear that no question is too small. Your availability and willingness to help will make a world of difference to a new resident finding their footing.
2. **Offer Guidance and Encouragement:** Provide constructive feedback and celebrate their successes. Positive reinforcement helps build confidence and competence.
3. **Facilitate Integration:** Help new residents integrate into the team and the larger hospital community. Introduce them to key personnel and familiarize them with the resources available to them.
Remember, the way we treat our new residents now will shape their experiences and perceptions for years to come. By showing empathy, providing guidance, and fostering a supportive environment, we help them grow into skilled, compassionate, and confident physicians.
More to come.
Everyone talks about #ESG and most focus on the E - Environment. #Sustainability is so important, we must not take away from that.
But, we must not forget that there are other elements and Social is so important, it underpins everything, its investing in a better future for those that will focus on E, S and G!
At #Canonmedical we want to cover all elements of ESG.
Sounds a lot like #MadeforLife to me...
..
Come to Stand A39 at #UKIO2024 and lets discuss it more.
Hope to see you next week!

Looking for actionable steps you can put into practice in the DEI Journey? Start here:
- Hire staff that reflects the patient population and the community served
- Offer developmental opportunities to a more diverse pool
- Make criteria for promotion or appointments objective and measurable
- Provide feedback to final candidates who were not selected
- Implement a sponsorship program designed to move a person forward in their career
This blog post summarizes a KBA webinar with industry leaders that offers many examples of how to implement these steps.

Really looking forward to The Careshow!
Myself Marc CaulfieldTroy Zimbalatti 💚💙John Powell FRSA will be discussing grief in the care sector. I feel that this is a subject that really isn't discussed enough. Service users can become like family to care professionals and the impact on their mental mental health when a service user can be profound.
Are we doing enough? Let me know your thoughts!

Tell us a little about you 😊
I am from Northern Ireland and moved to Leeds in 1982 to study medicine at the University of Leeds. I have lived in Leeds since. I am married and have 2 children, aged 17 and 21.
From 1994 to 2022, I was a full-time GP Partner in Bradford for 27 years. In 2023, I decided that I was ready for the new challenge of a portfolio career. Also, after working in one practice for so long, it is very stimulating to work in different practices with varied populations and set-ups.
Since January 2023, I have been working as a GP Locum for surgeries in Bradford, Harrogate and Leeds, regularly returning to most practices. The Medical Chambers has provided a brilliant organisation with helpful colleagues in a "virtual practice" setting for support/advice/education, and humour.
What was your first job 💷
Summer job pushing/collecting customer trollies at Belfast International Airport in 1985.
Why did you choose the field you are in 🩺
Interesting stimulating job with the opportunity to give continuity of care and a lot less red tape 30 years ago.
An achievement you are most proud of 👨⚕️
Settling into work as a GP Locum after 27 years as a GP partner and enjoying it again and getting very positive 360-degree feedback.
What does retirement look like 📸
Now!! I took early retirement at 59 last year and am still working on some clinical sessions. I hope to get more time for photography, travel and dog walking and not having a regular early morning commute.
What is your go-to morning beverage ☕
Coffee with caffeine ++
What does a perfect day off look like to you ✈️
A slow start! Travelling to an interesting place or event with my wife and grown-up kids.
Book or movie recently read or seen and would recommend and why 🎞️
Dune 2. I love Dune 2, and in this case, the remake is much better than the original 1984 version with Kyle MacLachlan, Patrick Stewart and Sting.
I also love police dramas and am enjoying Blue Lights, set in Belfast
Oldest item in your closet 🧢
School cap (does not fit !!)
A superpower you would like to have and why 🦸♂️
Mind control - I could then get (others) into all sorts of mischief

"Dr. Atellah had last week threatened a nationwide strike if over 1,000 medical interns were not hired, further criticising the Ministry of Health for refusing to absorb the medics thereby denying Kenyans medical services."
