Forget Cash, Forget Cards. Imagine a World Where One Scan Pays All. Why QR Codes Need a Universal Translation to create the next payment revolution not confusion ย  The rise of faster payments has brought a wave of QR code adoption. But a potential roadblock exists: the use of proprietary QR codes by individual payment systems. ๐—” ๐—Ÿ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ธ ๐—•๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ธ ๐—”๐˜ ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—›๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ค๐—ฅ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐˜€ QR codes, invented in 1994 by Denso Wave in Japan, started their journey in the automotive industry, they were initially used for tracking parts in production. Unlike traditional barcodes, QR codes hold significantly more information and can be scanned in any direction. They soon went beyond manufacturing, finding applications in identification, marketing & eventually payments. China adopted QR code payments through WeChat Pay & Alipay, to trigger a QR Code Payments Revolution. ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐—ฆ๐˜†๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ๐˜€ Proprietary QR codes, limited to specific payment services, create friction for users. Imagine juggling multiple QR code formats to make everyday purchasesโ€“clearly friction. ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐˜‡๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป: ๐—” ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ Imagine navigating a world with different power plugs for every device. That's the potential future of QR code payments *without* a common standard. Standardization empowers consumers to initiate payments from their phones, regardless of the merchant's payment provider. The matrix in the images shows examples of major QR code ecosystem players that have chosen to develop and implement proprietary specifications vs those who chosen to develop and implement a more harmonised approach, some using EMVCoโ€™s EMV specification for payments ย  ๐—ช๐—ต๐—ผ ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ? ๐—ฃ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ต ๐—ฉ๐˜€ ๐—ฃ๐˜‚๐—น๐—น ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐˜†๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐˜€ QR code functionality depends on who presents the code (consumer or merchant) and the payment flow (push or pull). 1/ Consumer-presented: The customer initiates the payment by scanning a code displayed by the merchant. This is a "pull" payment. Ex-restaurant bill 2/ Merchant-presented: The merchant generates a code for the specific payment amount, which the customer scans. This is a "push" payment. Ex-Paying a friend GSMA, highlights how these functionalities can be combined for a smooth payment experience. [Refer to image] Imagine a world where you can pay with a single scan, regardless of the payment app or service provider. This will create a ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐˜†๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐˜€ The answer lies in collaboration among the ecosystem players (Regulatory bodies, banks, fintechs) and a commitment to consumer convenience. One thing I don't like about QR codes for payments is that the dependence on mobile networks. Many of shops are located in places where the mobile network is unreachable. Obviously, it is not a good user experience to have to connect to the shop's wi-fi (if available) in order to make aย payment. Could static QR in CPM be the solution for that? What about the security concerns of having a static QR on the user side?

Monica Jasuja you need to research more on CPQR n MPQR. A push payment is MPQR while Pull Payment is CPQR you have shared exactly opposite reading . 2nd if we start following same path of harmoonizing QR we will follow legacy of cards i.e. EMV co QR . Alternative Payment Methods operators rather like to do innovations by agreeing you understand mine i understand your approach for interoperability of proprietary QR.

Standardizing QR codes for payments would greatly simplify transactions for consumers, similar to how universal phone chargers have made life easier. This move would not only enhance user experience but also foster greater inclusivity across various payment platforms. By reducing the friction caused by proprietary systems, a universal QR code standard could truly revolutionize the ease and accessibility of mobile payments.
