Now that the dust has settled after the sensational broadcast of Mr Bates vs The Post Office, we can see that televised drama can have a powerful real-world impact. The writer of Mr Bates Versus the Post Office, Gwyneth Hughes, is a journalist and a dramatist. She told The Sun that the best journalism asks us to use our heads, but the best drama goes straight to the heart. After years of vital reportage in publications like Private Eye, it has taken an ITV drama to grab people by the ventricles (that’s in the heart right?) and appal and enrage them. This generated the political pressure to finally deliver some justice for the sub-postmasters. (How and why Fujitsu continued to pick up government contracts needs to be the topic of a dark, distinctly British comedy. In America they would have been sued into extinction.) Robert Ebert, who coined the term, described film as a powerful empathy machine as a result of its unique ability to let people immerse themselves in someone else's reality and experiences, in a way that real life makes it difficult to. We’d broaden that definition to include comedy, as comedy can motivate and change people’s minds. So, any entertainment that moves people becomes an empathy machine, in a way that facts alone can never match. We co-produced a comedy doc for C4 that introduced new audiences to climate migration. The episode highlights how you can get involved with complex issues, whilst ensuring the content is still entertaining and engaging for audiences. Our audience for Harry Meets the Far Right were young urban audiences who typically didn’t engage in climate migration. Talent played a vital role in bridging the gap between issue and audience and ensuring we had the impact we needed. - The benefit of an entertainment-led approach (we’ve banned the word ‘storytelling’) is value. Bates has received wall-to-wall press and broadcast coverage, in publications that often don’t campaign for social justice. - Earning media is key, given the increase in advertising costs and the larger volume of advertising throttling people’s news feeds. Research suggests that social media has divided humanity into hostile, keyboard-wielding tribes, Empathy Machines have the power to repair that. #EmpathyMachine #Impact #MrBatesVersusthePostOffice
