There's a dearth of finance talent in the social sector. One of the longstanding places to recruit that talent, though, is the University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business—where MBAs benefit from a top-ranked finance curriculum, the Center for Social Sector Leadership at Berkeley Haas, and Sustainable & Impact Finance at Berkeley Haas. Now, Berkeley Haas is leading the way in developing that talent, too. I represent some large nonprofits and the recruitment challenge is real. Especially to get experienced mid-career professionals. They end up with a sort of bimodal distribution because they offer great experience to folks earlier in their career and can get folks who are on their “second mountain,” towards the end of their working years. But most mid-career CFOs and other executives aren’t ready to “hop off the train”.
