July 15-19 is Rural Road Safety Awareness Week, when we focus on the roadways in the more open areas of the US. Did you know that 30 people die each day from rural roadway departure crashes? (Source: FHWA) While many factors contribute to accidents, when we control what we can -- such as driver speed and attention -- we increase everyone's odds of arriving safely. Drivers are prohibited from overtaking snow plows when they operate in echelon formation on multi-lane highways with a posted speed limit of 80 km/h or more. Overtaking is only permitted when the designated lane is entirely clear of any part of the snowplow. It is crucial to respect these restrictions not only for your safety but also for the well-being of the snowplow operators working to maintain road conditions. The third week of July is Rural Road Safety Awareness Week (RRSAW). GHSA's report, funded by State Farm, reveals alarming statistics: There were 85,002 fatalities on rural roads from 2016 to 2020, with a 62% higher risk of dying in a crash compared to urban roads. This high rate is driven by factors such as a lack of safety resources, simpler infrastructure, and risky driver behaviors like impaired driving and speeding. Road Safety Conundrum. I listened to the commentary on radio over the week end on Road Deaths. Really frustrating https://lnkd.in/evTC3vRJ to hear the weak analysis of the situation. The plain fact is No One and Everyone is in charge of Road Safety. Long overdue to provided a singular national focus and eliminate many elements of the multi agency approach.
