Is it easy to find roads in poor condition in your county? Several factors can contribute to road deterioration over time, including the size of maintenance budgets, the extent of roadways an agency manages and the timing of preventative efforts. So how can different longitudinal joint construction methods help prevent road deterioration? Check out this webinar hosted by Jim Cunningham and Cullen Hesterberg to learn more. BROKEN RECORD: Over half the local roads in England and Wales have less than 15 years’ structural life left as the amount needed to fix the backlog of repairs rises to a record high of £16.3 billion. That's among the key findings of this year’s Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance (ALARM) survey report, published today by the Asphalt Industry Alliance. The report highlights the astonishing scale of the challenge faced by #localauthority highway teams who have a statutory responsibility to keep local roads safe but don’t have the funds to do so. Poor road conditions impact on our everyday lives, from the cost and inconvenience of damage to vehicles, to potentially causing accidents and injury to vulnerable road users such as cyclists – some of which have proven fatal. A successful pavement preservation program slows deterioration and ensures safer, smoother roads for travelers. However, treatment failures can hinder progress. These failures often stem from construction process breakdowns, like material issues or placement errors, and are preventable. Quality construction practices for both flexible and rigid pavements ensure safer and less disruptive pavement preservation. By following best practices, agencies can use effective treatments and reap their benefits. By partnering with Roadway Management Technologies, your agency can gain insight into pavement preservation techniques. The Francis Scott Key Bridge over the Patapsco River in Maryland is expected to take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to rebuild. The shipping channel from the Port of Baltimore, a major economic engine for the city, could be cleared in months. Federal officials have pledged to support the effort, but there is a difference of opinion on whether a bridge can be built to take a blow from a 100-million-ton freighter like the one that felled the Key Bridge. The Coast Guard's priority now is restoring the waterway for shipping, including stabilizing the Dali and removing it from the Patapsco. The cost of rebuilding the bridge is estimated to be well into the hundreds of millions, and there is likely to be debate around the structure of the new structure. Baltimore could see a new Key Bridge within 2½ years, a breakneck speed compared to the standard timetable for building similar bridges. The project could take several years, with funding being crucial. As the new bridge is designed, experts suggest planners should examine ways to prevent future collisions. New guidance from the National Transportation Safety Board may recommend engineers reexamine older bridges and build new protective structures if needed. Some states are building protection systems around vital bridges, such as the Delaware Memorial Bridge.
