June marks the beginning of Family Reunification Month – a month of celebration for parents who have put in the time, self-reflection, and hard work to reunite with their children. For the past 10 years, partners across Maricopa County have come together during this month to celebrate the more than 46,490 children in Arizona who have reunified with their families after overcoming the circumstances that caused the separation. Join the Judicial Branch of Arizona in Maricopa County in celebrating their success! I watched a Lemn Sissay talk recently where he asked a room of people: ‘How many of you are adopted? How many were fostered?’ One or two hands went up. Then he asked: ‘How many of you know someone who’s adopted? Or who fosters? Or who’s just taking care of someone in their family who’s not their birth child?’ Only one or two hands stayed down. Off the top of my own head I know one person who’s adopted, three families who have adopted, four families who foster, and now I’ve started talking about it there’s my mum’s friend whose niece is living with her just now, and my pal Su’s friend who’s taken on her grandkids, and my one of closest friends who was considering how she would juggle her teaching career with looking after a baby and a toddler as well as her own boys when her wider family’s situation got a little complicated. Fostering and adoption is everywhere! Kinship carers are everywhere too. So why are they still not properly supported financially and emotionally? It costs an estimated £200k to raise a child today. Where does that money come from when kinship carers are having to give up work and battle to be recognised in the eyes of the law? If you know someone who is a kinship carer get them to fill in Family Rights Group’s survey. 15 minutes of their time means that campaigns can be backed up with stats and stories that could redefine the future for them and the children they care for. #KinshipCarer #FamilyRights https://lnkd.in/ey-uVe-U
Have you ‘stepped into the breach’ to provide a home to children in your family? Did you get any financial, practical or emotional support when you offered to help to look after the children - to take on school runs and sandwiches and lack of sleep? To navigate a complex legal system? We know there are thousands of relatives and friends stepping up for children in times of need. You shouldn’t have to do this alone. Support services like our free advice line are available. But there are policies we need national and local government to change and introduce too. We at Family Rights Group want to know what you need and there are just two days left to contribute your experiences to our Kinship Carers Survey. For those who wear the mantle of kinship care – numbers, stories and your insights will help us to support you by pressing government for this recognition. Help us build a better system that values and supports kinship families. Many of you know that I spent 6 years as a trustee for Hope and Homes for Children (HHC), whose mission is to eliminate institutional care for children globally. A shocking statistic is that 80% of children in orphanages are not orphans, and many have mental and physical disabilities. Orphanages expose children to abuse, trafficking, and physical and psychological trauma that can last a lifetime. HHC has launched a petition which will be used in discussions with world leaders, governments, local authorities, and global and regional governing bodies to support getting children 'Back to Family'. If you support this cause, please add your name to the petition at https://lnkd.in/dExzKpFm #BackToFamily. @hopeandhomesforchildren

As Christmas approaches we delve into the emotional issue of deciding child contact for separated families on ‘big’ dates on the calendar. 🎄 With the festive period being the time that families traditionally spend together, it all too often sparks high emotions for parents who have split up but still want to spend as much time as possible with their children. At Gibson Kerr, we are a firm who firmly believe in the values of a family – so with this in mind, we always hope to guide people away from conflict, especially in areas where children are involved. 🗞 Read our full blog on this matter here: https://lnkd.in/eaecVnxZ #GibsonKerrLaw #GibsonKerr #FamilyLaw #FamilyChristmas

📚 Introducing a groundbreaking book that shines a light on a pressing issue: "The Two Parts Of The Book And The Issue Of Separating Children From Parents At The US-Mexico Border." 💔✨ In 2017, the former administration attempted a drastic measure - separating children from their parents when crossing from Mexico into the US, regardless of their familial ties. This compelling book unveils the heartbreaking consequences of this policy and the challenges faced by the federal government in 2020. One of the major hurdles was the lack of appropriate facilities to house these children, as this had never been done before. With limited options for their parents, many were deported, leaving behind a vulnerable and scattered group of children in the US. These children were then placed in the federal foster care system, desperately searching for relatives who could provide them with a sense of stability and love. Now, in 2023, over 5000 families remain separated, with some children not having seen their parents for six long years. The journey towards reunification continues, as dedicated organizations and individuals strive to solve these complex and heart-wrenching cases. #ReuniteFamilies #CompassionMatters #TheTwoPartsOfTheBook #USMexicoBorderChallenge #HeartbreakingStories
