It was great to chat with the Daily Mail about the replacement for Dame Sharon White as Chairman... There has been talk of making the role part time. However, downgrading the position in this way will limit options for hiring. Someone in the midst of their career isn’t going to want such a post. This confines JLP to older, possibly semi-retired individuals at or nearing the end of their career.    On top of this, the role of Chairman is defined in the John Lewis Partnership constitution as someone who is responsible for the commercial performance of the business and for appointing other executives. It is not really a part time role – especially as the Chairman is precluded from taking on other roles outside of JLP, unless given permission.    Sadly there is a lot of muddled thinking at JLP in terms of how the business should be structured and what the role of the Chairman is. It is not putting them in a position for success.    What the new Chairman needs to do is oversee a revitalization plan for both John Lewis and Waitrose and ensure there are top-notch people in charge of both divisions. At present, both parts of the business are on the back foot in terms of strategy and vision. They will also need to ensure the financial stability of JLP and continue the work of Sharon White in ensuring there is more discipline around finances. ON ROBERT F. KENNEDY JR AND HIS FAILING CAMPAIGN: Although I've occasionally written favorably about RFK Jr., the possibility wasn't high that I'd actually vote for him for President ... but I have a) been intrigued by his Presidential run), b) agreed with him on some things (not all), and c) liked his apparent willingness to shakeup and improve what looks to me to be a great system (the American system of governance) which, tragically though, is corrupted imo by highly compromised, amoral (in some cases, immoral), inept and unpatriotic leadership ...... and so, unlike with Pres. Biden, there was SOME small chance that I'd vote for him for President ..... until yesterday. Yesterday he picked his VP candidate (N. Shanahan) who is 1) an under 40 y/o individual with literally no resume in business or politics of any substance in the Presidential context, 2) a left-wing cause supporter (I know, that's a plus for some of you), 3) likely a billionaire (thus able to fund their campaign, probably the reason they were selected), but who 4) instead of earning the money they have by conceiving, organizing and creating something of value -- received it (or, at least, the vast majority of it) in a settlement from someone else who did. There is literally no reason to believe that IF (God-forbid) RFK Jr died while occupying the White House, this person (N. Shanahan, his VP pick) would make even a competent President (let alone a very good or great one) .... which is -- or at least should be -- the first and most important criteria for VP candidate (ie. running mate) selection. Sure, a campaign will follow from now till November (especially in swing states, so I'll likely miss most of it) ... and campaigns can sometimes make a difference .... but I can definitely say that if the election were held today, my chance of voting for Robert F Kennedy Jr or the Kennedy-Shanahan ticket went, yesterday, from SLIM to NONE. As a proponent for the Kennedy/Shanahan ticket, I respectfully disagree with your assessment of the vice-presidential pick. Shanahan's age should not be a disqualifying factor. Youthful energy and innovative thinking can be assets in addressing the complex challenges facing our nation. Secondly, Shanahan's support for left-wing causes should be seen as a positive trait, indicating a commitment to progressive values and social justice. Thirdly, the fact that Shanahan received a settlement should not overshadow their potential to contribute meaningfully to governance. Many successful leaders have come from diverse backgrounds, and Shanahan's experiences may offer a unique perspective on economic and social issues. Lastly, the primary criteria for a vice-presidential candidate should not solely be their ability to step into the presidency if needed. While that is an important consideration, a vice president also plays a crucial role in supporting the president's agenda. In conclusion, I believe that Shanahan's selection as vice-presidential candidate adds a valuable dimension to the Kennedy campaign, and I remain optimistic about their potential to lead alongside Robert F. Kennedy Jr
