🌟 Excited to share the release of a new report that I co-authored titled "Fostering Inclusion for Black Immigrant Students at HBCUs"! 📚 HBCUs have long been pillars of empowerment for Black communities, providing crucial educational opportunities. This month's enrichment activity: Faculty showcase & book reveal featuring Professor Linda M. Perkins and her new publication, To Advance the Race: Black Women's Higher Education from the Antebellum Era to the 1960s. From the United States' earliest days, African Americans considered education essential for their freedom and progress. Linda M. Perkins’s study ranges across educational and geographical settings to tell the stories of Black women and girls as students, professors, and administrators. Beginning with early efforts and the establishment of abolitionist colleges, Perkins follows the history of Black women's post–Civil War experiences at elite white schools and public universities in northern and midwestern states. Their presence in Black institutions like Howard University marked another advancement, as did Black women becoming professors and administrators. But such progress intersected with race and education in the postwar era. As gender questions sparked conflict between educated Black women and Black men, it forced the former to contend with traditional notions of women’s roles even as the 1960s opened educational opportunities for all African Americans. A first of its kind history, To Advance the Race is an enlightening look at African American women and their multi-generational commitment to the ideal of education as a collective achievement. #cgu #ses #cguses #carrytheflame

#Juneteenth celebrates emancipation, but let’s be honest, America owes #BlackAmerica a lot more than a day off. There’s still a knife in the back of progress, holding Black communities back, generation after generation. Quality education is the key to unlocking the true promise of Juneteenth. We can’t talk about freedom without equal opportunity to learn and thrive. Emancipation freed Black people from physical chains, but segregated schools became new shackles. Quality education is today’s Juneteenth, the long-delayed promise of a level playing field. Politicians love to brag about “the American Dream,” but for Black students, it feels more like a recurring nightmare. Underfunded schools, biased curriculums, and a lack of resources keep Black students from reaching their full potential. This Juneteenth, let’s acknowledge the unfinished business of racial justice. Let’s confront the educational inequality that continues to hold Black America back. We need teachers, parents, and communities to fight for equity, not just equality. Let’s dismantle the systems that perpetuate the “knife in the back,” and build schools that empower ALL students to chase their dreams. Share this post, tag someone who can make a difference, and let’s make Juneteenth a turning point. The recent events detailed in this video serve as a painful reminder of the urgent need for action against racism in our institutions, particularly in our schools, colleges, and universities. The trauma inflicted on the Utah basketball team will have a profound impact. Moving venues does not take erase the deep pain of racism. This incident highlights the critical importance of prioritizing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives in schools. No student-athlete should ever have to experience such blatant acts of racism, and it is imperative that organizations such as the NCAA and universities take proactive steps to ensure the psychological safety of Black student-athletes who are the most vulnerable within these spaces. As head coach Lynne Roberts shared, the recent incident left everyone at a loss, unsure of how to handle the trauma inflicted on the players. The impact of this egregious act of racism will stay with the players for a lifetime. It’s high time that organizations such as the NCAA and university leadership prioritize creating psychological safety from racism. If they fail to do so, they are sending a harmful message, loud and clear. Racism hurts everyone, and it is incumbent upon all of us to prioritize addressing and eradicating it from our institutions. LinkedIn Followers my class is in session The Little Rock Nine were a group of African American students who were enrolled in Little Rock Central High School in 1957. This marked the first time African American students attended an all-white high school in the southern United States. The integration was met with intense opposition, including protests, violence, and the deployment of the National Guard by the Governor of Arkansas. Despite facing harassment and discrimination, the Little Rock Nine bravely attended school, symbolising the struggle for civil rights and the fight against segregation. Their resilience and determination highlighted the systemic racism and inequalities of the time and still does today. The legacy of the Little Rock Nine continues to define society today by reminding us of the ongoing battle for equality, diversity, and inclusion. Their story serves as a powerful example of the courage and perseverance required to challenge injustice and promote social change. It underscores the importance of education, empathy, and unity in creating a more just and equitable society. In the video below filmed in 1996 you will see a white woman speaking. She is apologising for tormenting the African American women who were students with her in the 50’s. I need you to listen very carefully to her words before you comment. Then I would like to invite you to answer my questions. 1. To what extent should individuals be held accountable for their actions, considering the influence of upbringing, as exemplified by the statement about being "raised in a racist family" in the video clip? 2. How do you determine ethical norms, assessing whether they align more with familial values or personal ethical principles? 3. What implications arise for society and communities when individuals knowingly participate in reprehensible behaviors despite being aware of their malevolent nature?
